KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /remove-dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

pause

    Hi,

Have tried to update my Win 8.1/64 for the last 4-5 weeks.

    1. I have tried automatic download a number of times and get the same error code others. I have followed the instructions above - and elsewhere in the thread - without any success.
    2. I have downloaded the 64 bit offline installers Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu with clearcompressionflag.exe, KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2959977, KB2937592, KB2938439, and KB2934018) and KB2919355 does not install.
    3. Run sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    1. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

    Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    Image Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    [==========================100.0%==========================]

The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired.

    Error: 0x800f081f

DISM failed. No operation was performed.

For more information, review the log file.

Any suggestions? 850+ users in the organization I work for are supposed to "upgrade" to Win 8.1 this year but this is a nightmare.

The only thing that worked for me was to perform a repair install from a DVD I burned from an ISO image downloaded from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

After installing with a generic key, I was able to change it to my Windows 8.0 retail DVD key and activate.  Then I could successfully download all the updates, including KB2919355.

I was able to run disk cleanup with system files, including previous WIndows installations and Windows update file cleanup to reclaim some disk space.

I then ran DISM /online /cleanup-image /stsatcomponentcleanup which reclaimed even more disk space, although it takes a long time to complete.

Now, I can run DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth (or /restorehealth)  with no errors.

Yes, it was quite time consuming, but at least it allowed me to keep all my installed programs, apps, data files and most system settings and device drivers.

I'm still very upset that this KB29139355 update originally caused my component store corruption to begin with, and I have verified that fact by restoring a pre-update image on which I could run all DISM commands without failure.  But eventually I had to accept the fact that Microsoft would probably tell me to do a repair install anyway.

Woe be to any Microsoft tech who tells me to do a repair install without providing me a way to download the media to actually freaking do it.

It should NOT BE THIS HARD TO GET MEDIA FOR A PRODUCT WE HAVE PAID FOR.

That's why I'm personally going back to Windows 7 SP 1 temporarily and when support ends (or possibly prior with a dual boot) I will be switching to Linux.  It's really shameful that MS doesn't apparently care about loyal customers.  I had been an avid advocate for Windows for 11 years and this fiasco has changed my mind forever.  If I live to be 110 I will never buy another Windows product...then again, at this rate I am probably going to outlive Microsoft as the plain truth shows bad business practices and not caring about customer service or loyalty does spell the demise of companies in this highly competitive market.  I know MS is losing money on its tablets and frankly I have interacted with more than one person who has either gone back to Windows 7 or migrated to Linux after this fiasco.
