KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

I too have had this problem attempting to run KB2919355 on my ASUS P1801 AiO.

The update gets to 99%, fails and then undoes all changes made by the patch attempt. I have tried eliminating all other programs running at startup except the commercial copy of the Emsisoft Online Armor personal firewall. Four attempts have been made to no avail.

The DISM command that you (Susan) suggested to run did not seem to work - I did run it elevated (right-click on tile then Run as Administrator). However it did not seem to do much as whatever ran -  or did not run - disappeared almost immediately and returned me to the command prompt.

Until this point I have not had any issues running Microsoft Update on the P1801.

Let me know how to proceed and I thank you for your time.

    Paul

My issue is resolved and I thought it might help someone although most the following is more of background value for many of you.

First of all, the core problem that caused the problem in applying KB29919355 was that the Windows Component Core on my Asus AiO P1801 was corrupted - quite badly as a matter of fact. It took a repair re-install of Windows 8.1 to fix the corruption and finally allow the update to successfully conclude.

Second of all - thank you Susan for responding quickly to my request and assigning a cordial and thorough Microsoft tech who spent about two hours troubleshooting the various problems that the corruption of what is essentially the heart of Windows had caused. Creating a new user was necessary since my administrator-level login was also corrupted and would not complete tasks. After booting Windows 8.1 clean (especially disabling my third-party Emsisoft firewall and anti-Malware - more on them in a bit!), the tech was able to perform tasks that I had not been able to do in recent days (access the Store from the Metro tile, open other Metro tiles and run most administrator-level CLI commands successfully.)

Third, the question arises - what caused the corruption? Be advised that the following is speculation and only time will tell if it is indeed THE cause. The tech relied on his experiences with other similar corruption issues and speculated that it was the Emsisoft Anti-Malware/Anti-Virus program that may have caused the damage to the component core. Although he admitted to not being familiar with Emsisoft products he had seen another anti-virus vendor product cause corruption due to it lacking full compatibility with 8.1 - most of you may know that the 8.1 upgrade occasioned MAJOR changes in the OS core. In other words, compatibility with 8 did NOT mean compatibility with 8.1.

I am currently waiting to hear from Emsisoft whether their product is fully compatible with Windows 8.1 - they state on their site that it will work with Windows 8 but no specific mention (that I could find anyway) was made to it being compatible to 8.1.

Anyway, again my thanks to a stellar response from Microsoft on this - and I shall be much more vigilant about installation of intrusive products (like security programs, anti-virus, etc.,) without making absolutely CERTAIN that they are FULLY compatible.

And I am learning to re-appreciate the simple pleasure of the included Windows Firewall and Windows Defender while I research third-party compatibility with Windows 8.1!

    Paul
