KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

    There's that darn echo again...

PS: KB2939087 may be offered & installed before KB2919355 is installed.

I made some progress, after second restart it "tried" to install, but had to revert. By this I mean it got to the "preparing Windows update" screen after restart.

    .

    I never got this.

I have been trying to restore the default start menu directory structure in windows 8. When I had windows 7 I organized it.

I saw a post through regarding the "system tools" folder and this error. People mentioned they were able to get the update to work by making sure this folder was located in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" even a blank "system tools" folder was reported to fix it for the poster.

I did not have this folder in this location. I did however, have a folder called "Windows System" I took ownership, set permissions, and renamed "Windows System" to "System Tools" (I was unable to create a folder in this directory with that name) and saw some more noticeable progress during the installation.

Could this be a simple directory structure problem?

Is there a way to restore the default windows 8 (edit) directory structure (start menu) in windows 8.1?

    Update as of 4/9/2014

Worked with Tech Support for several hours today.

Despite valiant efforts they are doing more research.

They did get Windows Update to update Office. Seemed to work okay (who knows at this point).

Took my other Windows 8.1 Media Center computer and wiped it. Reinstalled with iso. Installed.

Restored Office. Beginning restore of backup now.

My best guess at this point is that the problem is specific to the big patch ...355.  My second best guess is that fundamentally the patch is okay, but for the unlucky, some dependency on our computers has been whacked. What did the whacking still unknown.

Trying to look for consistencies (we all list different things), it does appear to be most common on 64-bit Media Center units.

For the record, other things that made my machine different are 1) I was using Symantec Cloud AV, and Webroot AV. 2) I run as standard user (not admin). 3) I run Carbonite backup.

This is an old DELL. Has a SDD C: drive. This drive has approximately 111GB free space.

Can others having the problem spot any consistencies?

    Michael
