KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /remove-dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

pause

Well, I have a Surface Pro with an SSD and I also run as a standard user.  That is all I can see that we have in common.

    Fix critical download re: KB2919355

Successful install on one desktop with SSD drive and Windows 8.1 64 bit Pro with Media Center installed over Windows 7 and then moved to the SSD drive).  PC has multiple operation systems.

Does not complete install on Desktop with Hybrid drive and Windows 8.1 64 bit (clean install).  DISM text file shows problems with filename, directory name, or volume label syntax being incorrect.  Later on the file shows not enough disk space.

Does not complete install on Laptop with SSD drive and Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center 64 bit  (installed over Windows 7).  DISM text file shows problems with filename, directory name, or volume label syntax being incorrect.  Later on the file shows not enough disk space.

As you can see the problem appears to be where the update tries to install!

Used System Restore to go back to before the update was applied.  As suggested by other members of the Community, I ran SFC and Disk Cleanup and finally the following commands to fix corruption:

    1. Open admin command prompt. (This is how: you can go to search charm, type "cmd" then right click on the Command Prompt and select Run as administrator)
    2. Type following command and press enter:

    DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

    1. You will notice package name similar to this, the amd64 could be different based on OS architecture:

    Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    1. If you see no output for step# 3 then jump to step# 6, otherwise run following command:

    DISM /online /remove-package /packagename:<Name of the package you got from step# 3>

the exact command will look like as below:

    DISM /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. Run following command: DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

    Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    Image Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    [==========================100.0%==========================]

    1. Now install KB2919355 and restart after install.  I repeated the above procedure several times as install never completed including the manual download from the Microsoft Download Center.  When I finally quit the KB 2919355 update was in Windows Update on the Desktop but not the Laptop.

My setupapi.dev.log had 6 0x00000003 errors (Path\File not found) in it. Setup was failing when searching for 6 inf files in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository. Im not sure this is what is halting it, but it definitely is running into hickups due to these files not being present.

I have cleaned out the driverstore (C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore) before, but I removed nothing I was using, nor did I think I was removing anything vital (no ms drivers) to normal update operations. The system has no problems except this update.

I cant refresh\restore to get these files back (I'm assuming I would if I did), because I have no media (updated via store) to perform a refresh.

I restored my backup and don't have the logs (doh!), but I can try this again tomorrow. Several times most likely (OS Drive is only a 40gb SSD so its a fast restore).
