KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

You might note I opened this thread on 4/4. It is now 4/12.

Worked with Microsoft last week, but at this point (Saturday PM) my computer won't even run DISM correctly. Get error messages like: /Restorehealth invalid parameter. DISM logs totally corrupted--filled with Asian characters. Really quite pretty, but totally random and useless.

I'm glad that for some of you it appears that the remove package, cleanup, reboot, reinstall process (see page 28 and beyond) appears to work.

However:

REMEMBER, UNTIL YOU MAKE IT THROUGH THE MAY UPDATES YOU REALLY DON'T KNOW THAT ALL IS WELL.

Sorry to yell, but that is a fact. This update is key to continued update servicing. So no matter what, until that works, you only appear to be fixed. You can hope you were fixed. But you really don't know.

Tip to Microsoft, which I am sure they will ignore, just like they ignored this issue when I reported it last week. But, it might be nice if there were a test patch that told you that once the patch was installed it could install a patch. Even if the patch was essentially a no-op. From what I've seen the fact that Defender updates signature files or Office installs patches has no bearing on whether or not Windows will update.

Mean while, I am twiddling my thumbs for the second weekend in a row. Maybe someone will tell me how I can get license keys that allow me to upgrade in place. If not, looks like next week I face the prospect of wiping my machine, reinstalling Vista, Upgrading to 7, Upgrading to 8, Upgrading to 8.1 (which from the store, now appears to include the Windows 8.1 Update. Oh yeah, and then restoring my apps and data. Likely two more days of work, which means minus two days of work for pay. Yes, Windows 8 is certainly improving my productivity.

All for a free update that really doesn't do that much.

Stunned to learn how fragile update serving really is. For example, did you know it is possible for Windows Update to completely skip a patch because your system has become corrupt. And you will get no message, because Windows Update merely thinks it was offered a patch it doesn't need. Unless you carefully noted which patches should have been installed, check the log after word (not just for success or failures but for MISSING patches), then you can have the false sense of security that every thing is okay. This is what happened on one of my machines. It had not installed a Windows Update for three months. So corrupt I had to repave and rebuild.

Oh, well. One more thing, a disclaimer if you will, this is to quote Dennis Miller: just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I have exactly same problem on my Win8.

Is there a fix for this issue?

Package KB2919355 failed to be changed to the Installed state. Status: 0x80073712.
