I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /remove-dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

pause

I'm happy to report that after numerous attempts at fixing 355 I finally have a working version of 8.1 Update 1 but the process was far from easy.

I had tried all the options suggested on this board without success. It would get to 20% and then it would fail followed by an un-doing.

I decided to call Microsoft support who tried to help but ended up referring me to an escalation engineer. He told me that he had a solution and that was to refresh my install using a USB ISO image I had. He directed me to run setup.exe from within the Windows environment and said he'd call back in a couple of hours. After the refresh I was happy all my applications were left untouched but my happiness didn't last as I still couldn't install 355. I tried the refresh process again but again no luck. I even noticed that pre 355 updates were now failing at 20%.

What in the **** has MS done I kept on asking myself.

Anyway, after 5 more attempts at refreshing I decided to give in and refresh without keeping my apps, settings etc. It was a hard decision as felt that MS should have tested 355 a little more to avoid the headaches we're all having but I needed to move past this otherwise I was going to put more dents in the wall with my head. So now with a 'clean' refresh I was looking forward to seeing a successful install of 355. Would you believe that it failed again at 20% AGAIN!!!!

I was lost for words and looking hard at a space on the wall to headbutt. I just couldn't understand how a fresh install was failing. Anyway, I tried it again just in case but had the same results.

Finally I decided to boot from the USB Image instead of the desktop, format the destination drive to ensure nothing was left and try again. Finally Success!!! :) 355 installed without any problems. It only took 3 days of my life that I'll never get back but at least it worked. I do have to re-install all my apps etc but I can now at least sleep again which I guess some MS engineers are rightfully missing at the moment.

I suspect that this isn't going to be an easy or quick fix for them to produce as there seems to be multiple problems, but they can't expect everyone affected to flatten their PC and start again.

Anyway, good luck to you all.

    Reporting success!

    After many attempts...

    In elevated command prompt:

    dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    shutdown /r /t 0

    After restart start:

    Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu

    (before downloaded MS offline file)

After many attemps, it works for me !

    Thanks a lot !

So, here another one with code 800F0922...

    First my basic system info:

    • Toshiba satellite P70 64bit, Intel-based
    • Win 8.1 installed from scratch on a 100GB HDD-partition (HDD not GPT, UEFI deactivated / BIOS-emulation mode)
    • installed on march 2014, all updates via cp-update, running without problems since then, no errors and warnings logged

First attempt to install the 355er on 8th of april - update came together with 5 others (the updated IE, new Flashplayer for IE etc.), download very slow, didn't complete, instead installation error 80073712...

I thought it could be the server load since this was a much avaited update - so downloaded the required files manually from MS and gave it another try (without cleaning up in the meantime - still thinking it's only a server problem).

Long installation, 2 states: long time stayed at 0 but working, then jumped to about 45%, working, then 100% and failure - but no roll-back, like some other stated...?

So I re-imaged to the point before patchday (entire image with clonezilla, made the same day before starting updates) and began to search the internet about problems with the 355er - here I am.

So I unticked the 355er and let the other updates install.

Now all was up to date except our baby... Interesting enough, in my logs I found a warning right after the reboot: diaglog has reached the maximum size, bla bla... never had before. I used the system in this state for 1 day and the warning was logged after every reboot...

I then tried all the stuff mentioned here to get 355 to work - dism results where not consistent, dism seems to destroy itsself, restorehealth always worked only for the first time, second attempt failed (did it 4 times with re-imaging)

The package remove thing also doesn't work - the package does not leave itsself behind, not in manual and not in automatic (WU-) attempt.

So I reverted to an image from 28th of march, unticked again the 355er when updating - and again I got the diaglog-warning after updating the other stuff... But now when I try to install the 355er via CP, I get error 800f0092....

    Observation:

After failed install (no matter if on- or offline) the Windows Update is broken - the update history doesn't show up (although the list of installed updates shows up!) and checking for updates gives an error.

FixIt and the whole cleaning and repairing dism stuff can't help - WU stays broken...

The only things I didn't try so far where copying over the mentioned directories from a fresh install and doing myself a repair installation or refresh - the last two being NO options for me!

Susan, I think I'll email you...
