KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

Well... after almost a week I lost my temper yesterday. I was afraid all this tampering with WU just made everything worse. Since I have tried to make a fresh install with the recovery dvd´s from Packard Bell and still failed the 355 Update I got hold of a 8.1 Core.iso. I extracted my OEM-key with a tool, used the 8.1 Core DVD and made a clean install... The process took 45 minutes, I didn´t have to use any key during installation... just clicked "skip" when I got asked. Activated it efterwards with my OEM key and it worked fine.

The process looked different when the 355-update came. It took a few minutes efter downloading until it wanted to reboot. No waiting, no "freezing"... just installed without a hitch.

Now? Well, this should NEVER have happened. My faith in MS got a big slap in the behind... and this is from a guy that moderates a big Windowsforum in Sweden.... sweet jesus.

I wonder if all the research from users here in this forum and elsewhere is not counterproductive...

If after all a significant amount of users having trouble with the 355er manage to install the update with one of the workarounds, Microsoft could sit back and do nothing - since the amount of users still having problems is no more significant...

I doubt we see a fix that eliminates nearly all problems. So a lot of users will end up installing from scratch, loosing all their customization and personal adjustments to the system. If you have to do this again and again, you loose motivation and give up. And MS has won - you use the system just the way they want...

Sadly, Windows' USP was for a lot of user the fact, that unlike Mac OS you are able to widely adapt the system to your needs - just like Linux, but without the lack of powerful professional software...

Now Windows drifts towards Mac, so why not directly buying a Mac?

It makes me sad.

Point on the so called "fixes":

The KB2939087 fix is indeed drive-by installed, without showing up and even if you untick the KB2919355. Nice, but useless if you still receive the fixed error after trying 355....
