I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

    Hi Martin,

Agree on that, I was expecting to read a lot of bad articles on the main press on this failed Win 8.1 Update. It seems Microsoft still has good PR...

But, 10 days after April Updates, it's unbelievable that they haven't publicly admitted this major update issue AND provided a simple solution.

How can they pretend that us customers are trustful and loyal after that?

Hey all, I wanted to add to this thread that for my system to successfully update to 8.1 Update 1 I had to download the recently updated Microsoft volume license edition of 8.1 that now has update 1 included and do a in-place reinstall.  Everything worked ok after except the latest NVidia beta drivers including the NVidia GeForce experience will blue screen crash my system so I left that version off.

I was not really happy since none of the solutions in this thread worked for me until I got this new volume license edition of 8.1 and did the reinstall. I realize that most users will not have access to the volume edition but it is an option for those of us who do.  Thanks all for a great roller-coaster ride !

hi Susan, afraid I have tried everything. I cant do a refresh, cant risk all my work and settings going up in smoke.

when it first came on WU I got error 800F0922. retried a few times then found this answer thread. worked my way thru the suggestions. used sfc and disk clean. then had error 80073712. restored to 4th april. tried again back to earlier error number. still nothing. used both downloaded version and WU. sometimes fails in windows sometimes after 100% installed and in the reboot section.

seems very strange. I have a dell xps8500 with the 32gb ssd cache memory. driven by the intel rapid storage system. think that could be it?

I expect it will be rewritten to be less touchy.

please press on though. strange the main press hasn't caught up with these problems

    cheers mart
