KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /remove-dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

pause

I have duplicated success with my AMD FX8350 desktop that is running 8.1 pro media center and with my INTEL I3-2377M laptop running just 64 bit 8.1, I followed these steps and had success with both machines.

I manually downloaded KB2919355 (690.8 MB) from this link & I turn antivirus to game mode/silent.

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335

Then I followed these steps, I also got an error with DISM RESTORE HEALTH but I continued with the rest of the steps and it worked!!!!!

STEPS FOR STANDALONE INSTALL DOWNLOAD KB29123355 SEPARATE, DO NOT USE WINDOWS UPDATE:

    1. Open admin command prompt. (This is how: you can go to search charm, type "cmd" then right click on the Command Prompt and select Run as administrator)
    2. Type following command and press enter:

    DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

    1. You will notice package name similar to this, the amd64 could be different based on OS architecture:

    Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    1. If you see no output for step# 3 then jump to step# 6, otherwise run following command:

    DISM /online /remove-package /packagename:<Name of the package you got from step# 3>

the exact command will look like as below:

    DISM /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. Run following command:

    DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    1. Run following command:

    DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    1. Now install KB2919355 standalone patch (690.8 MB) from microsoft.com and restart after install.

When successful machine boots straight to desktop after login and you will see store app icon in taskbar.

I repeat, I have done this twice today with 100% success!!!!!! Yes it takes time and I am sure microsoft will find a automatic fix since this patch is required by 13 May 14 for future updates. Make sure antivirus is in game/silent mode or disabled during installation of patch.

    GOOD HUNTING!!!

Hello Susan. Yes I am impacted and cannot get KB2919355 to load. I tried again today with the most recent release of 355 dated 4/16/2014 (890.2 Mb).

I do not get an error code. Here is what happens:

    1. Select 355 update from WU.
    2. Download starts and hangs at 30% for about 15 min (no DSL activity).
    3. Download continues and hangs at 78% for about 5 min (no DSL activity).
    4. Download finishes.
    5. Get message "Working on Update".
    6. After 30% the spinning circle (hour glass) moves from the center of the screen to the left side.
    7. Screen goes black
    8. Screen goes to normal password request (fingerprint swipe). I do so.
    9. Screen goes blue and says "(Windows or Update) ran into a problem and needs to restart"
    10. Steps 08 & 09 repeat twice then goes to Automatic Recovery.
    11. I opt to fix via old recovery point.
    12. System restores and is back in operation without the 355 update.

I wish to emphasize that I am not a tech person and am not going to fidget around trying to fix this using all kinds of advanced commands and risk trashing my computer, nor should I have to pay a MCSE to do it. This is clearly a MS issue and needs to be resolved in an end-user friendly way. That is what I paid for and that is what I expect and demand from MS.

    Hello Drew

I did what you say and it still does not work.

I also did all the steps documented on the support's knowledge base. No success

All others updates have been installed without problems. It is only KB2919355 Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent. Uninstalled WebRoot. Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed. Error message in the update history is now 80073712.") that did not work.

So it seems obvious that it is KB2919355 Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent. Uninstalled WebRoot. Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed. Error message in the update history is now 80073712.") that causes trouble. Isn't there no more a skilled technician at Microsoft that is able to diagnoses that bug and correct it? 55 pages of complaints and no one at Microsoft is able to set traces/logs to resolve it? A shame! At least if it did not work remove it from Windows update and please stop saying it is required if it is so buggy.

    thanks

PS: sorry if i seem a bit nervous but it is now my third evening that i try to install it searching in all the support and forums.
