KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

The Recovery Media is essentially a copy of the Windows 8 recovery environment plus a copy of the recovery partition from the hard drive.  That recovery partition will include the OEM's preinstalled software so it won't be an exact image of what is on regular installation media.  Also, since USB sticks are generally formatted as FAT32, the install image will be broken up into 2GB or smaller chunks.  But I think the real issue is, as you say, the key issue, or it refuses to put an 8.0 standard image over 8.1 Pro.

I started screwing around with virtual systems for testing but it just started wasting more of my time.  I shouldn't have to be Microsoft's beta tester.

Not too sure how this board works so I'll mention I've edited my post above.

Also to post without replying: have you tried to reply to the original poster? It has a certain elegance at any rate.

Edit: deleting the post because of lack of sleep.

    Moving on.

recimg is very interesting. However maybe not so helpful for Chris as we already know the original restore media on hand is potentially broken or likely unusable do to new ms serials which makes restoring the image a problem; and creation of new image will include corrupt data from updates. I'm on unfamiliar territory here.

If the manufacturer has included a button somewhere that points to a 'create a new restore media' there is a chance the data may compose the thumb drive with files from a hidden partition while looking at the current key in the registry and therefore making reset a possibility.

Reset will probably not be possible for Chris because the original installation was 8.0 and the current installation is 8.1. A clean install, a new purchase, or a fix from MS are the likely options.

However I'm personally looking into where to put a recovery image on my current hard drive after the recent clean installation thank you Robert.
