KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore (must be an intel machine if intel, or amd machine if amd, x32 and x64 must match too)

C:\ProgramData\

C:\Users*username*\*

C:\Users\Public***

C:\Users\Default***

C:\User\DefaultAppPool***

Take these directories from a working install of windows 8.1.u1 (or any w8 that would succeed/has succeeded in updating), make sure ownership\permissions are set, and copy them back to your machine, but do not overwrite anything (extremely important). This will retain everything on your computer, but by not overwriting you are not "changing" anything your system depends on to operate. It places files that windows is searching for upon installing this kb that were missing, back. This allows the update to install, or it has in my case. Twice.

Image backup first.

I have fixed this problem on 2 machines now by doing this.

*** might not be necessary, but recommend doing so anyways (again you are copying, without overwriting, you are only adding files that the installer is looking for)

I have given up trying to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Update. Wasted a few days on this already. I tried everything including DISM RestoreHealth etc but that too fails.

Luckily the installation does not do any harm, my table still working, so I can still use it.

I have disabled the auto update in my Windows 8.1 tablet to prevent it from retrying to update again.

I will wait for another 1 or 2 months until this is (hopefully) resolved by Microsoft before retrying again.

I have not received Kb2919355 via windows update. I did receive it on all my other computers.

I see that I received Kb2919442 in March so that is not the issue.

I understand that in the near future if KB2919355 is not installed I will no longer receive any window updates. I downloaded the KB2919355 through the Microsoft download websites (64 ) but when I try and install it says my machine can not use it. I checked my computer and the KB2919355 is not installed.

What is the problem?
