KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

I'm wondering if there is a commonality to all this. By any chance did everyone experiencing this issue previously install a start button emulation program such as IObit's Start Menu 8?

If it helps at all, I did. Note that after I uninstalled Start Menu 8 the KB2919355 problem still remains. Perhaps it corrupted the file structure?

Since I might suck at tutorials I'll just say this.

Copy these directories from another system, or a clean install. ("defaultstuff" actually refers to 3 folders: Public, Default, and DefaultAppPool.)

I took them from a fresh, but unactivated 8.1 (pro, no wmc) update 1 install on my own system, copied them to a secondary drive, and restored my activated 8.1 image.

    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore

C:\ProgramData (you probably just need the Microsoft folder. Folder is small after a restore\install)

    C:\Users\defaultstuff***

C:\Users*username*\Appdata\Microsoft\ (I actually just took the whole users folder, it is not very big after a restore\install, I would actually do this instead)

Copy them back to your own system, but do not overwrite anything, and skip any files that may be in use.

This restored the "start menu" to however this update wanted it, as well as restoring driver file locations that my CBS logs were failing (0x0000003) on.

I had virtually every error mentioned in this topic, after doing this it installed via WU no problemo.

This is an easy fix, and you wont lose anything. The hardest part is getting access to another Windows 8.1 (probably 8) system. It can be your own, if you have an image to restore.

You will also need to do a bit of spring cleaning after this fix, such as removing update files, stuff that may not have been needed to be copied (not EXACTLY sure what the "start menu" is missing). I would say I lost about 600mb in the end (pretty much what others who successfully installed it are reporting). Ill take it.

    ***may not be necessary.

I also want to add that if you are using custom themes (uxstyles) they do not work right in this update (block right click functionality in metro). So just enable a Windows theme.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that "installing updates" was paused at 97 percent during the update for several minutes. I have an HTC phone in a cradle. On a hunch I took it out, it jumped to 100 percent. The phone works fine with this update. Setup was hung on something related to this.
