KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

pause

Popping in to say every single potential solution as listed above has been tried, including running clearcompressionflag.exe first.

I'm hesitant to run alternative solutions found in other replies, as I fear damaging my system further.

I'll be interested in setting up a support case for this.

I can't even get the "alternative solutions" to work, as I still have issues with it accepting keys.  None of these "generic" keys everyone keeps saying to use to reinstall seems to work.  Why they changed to a new key scheme for 8.1 aI don't know, but since I have an 8.1 Pro installation but my key is for OEM 8.0 Standard, there doesn't appear to be any feasible path for me but a bare metal 8.0 install and no one will give me media for that (and no, the Microsoft "download media" link doesn't work, it perpetually says "We can't connect right now".)

After many days of failures and getting various errors, this is how I finally installed KB2919355 :

    1. Make sure KB2919442 is already installed.
    2. Download offline installers Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu (690.8 MB) from: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335

We'll be using it later on.

    1. Now Download and Run Fix Windows Update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/
    2. Go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and create a new folder and rename it "System Tools". It may disappear after you rename it. That's alright.
    3. Open Command Prompt with Administrative Rights. Execute the following commands one after another:

    sfc /scannow

    dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe (Select the drive where your OS resides after being prompted, then when given the options of files to be deleted, select all files)

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. Now run the KB2919355 offline installer which we had downloaded in step 2.
    3. It will show the message "Installation is Complete", then click "Restart Now"
    4. Windows will work on updates till 30%, restarts and completes the rest of the working.

    That's it...

I'm really pleased for you but I'm pretty certain those are the same commands I've used before and that the 2 MS techies used earlier this week and they still couldn't get it to work.  I'm supposed to get a phone call from the second techie on Monday so here's hoping.
