KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /remove-dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

pause

I, like so many others are also having installation issues with KB2919355... for the past week.... Like so many others, the update gets the the final round @ 100% complete and then starts backing itself out.

Though, unlike those who can use the above steps, I have error 0x800F0922 in my logs instead and so those methods do not seem to resolve the root cause.

I've tried the repair tool, the src /scannow command, the numerous dism commands in this thread (i.e., scanhealth, repairhealth, startcomponentcleanupt, etc.), purging the update data via dism, cleanmgr, and manually, and whatever else made sense to ensure no traces of the update remained in caches, etc. I've tried both the automated and manual versions (both numerous times). I'm now quite readily convinced the issue is not my computer, but in-fact the update itself. It is broken, and not ready for prime-time and was clearly not given a sufficient round of testing.

P.S. I have a day-one Windows 8 Pro install, with no frills attached. As far as i'm concerned, this computer is as stock as stock can be. The update should have worked.

Did you modify your Start Menu structure? Delete or move any folders in it like Administrator Tools, Windows System, etc.?

    Intel here too. Hmm.. ?

I wonder if all the failed updates are on machines with a certain Intel driver?

    NVIDIA here.

Like many others, I was getting “Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0922: Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355)”.  This was on my Surface Pro (first edition!) which had Windows 8.1.

I solved the problem in the end by using the “Remove everything and reinstall Windows” process through Windows 8 Recovery.  Not ideal, was a last resort, but it did the trick.

I had tried all the suggestions in this thread as well as many others I found on the net, mostly regarding DISM, SFC, manual patch installs, Windows Update database clean-ups, chkdsks and much more all to no avail.

That said, this PC was the only one that I had issues with – the update worked just fine on all our other PCs.

Interestingly when reinstalling I went through the usual process, getting Windows 8.0 up, getting the Windows Updates for that, installing Windows 8.1 through the store, and then was expecting to install the Windows 8.1 update, but found it had been installed as part of the 8.1 store install.  Clearly then, the Windows 8.1 package has been updated to incorporate the update, which makes sense.  But in this case the patch to update 8.1 to 8.1 update would not work….for reasons still unknown.

I don’t know why the Surface Pro had problems, it didn’t have any software on that was much different to our other PCs, Office, Visual Studio, SQL Management tools, a few light utilities and that’s it.  I wish I could work out what the problem was.

    Good luck everyone!
