I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

    I can't do a repair install - I don't have an 8.1 ISO or key.

I have an original Surface Pro which came with Windows 8 which I upgraded to 8.1 via the Windows Store.

I have no working restore points prior to this 8.1 Update either, so I am stuck.

Just got off the phone after a couple of hours with MSFT Tech Support, they were unable to get this update installed on my Surface Pro.

They tried the same DISM etc commands reported in here, and as I have already proven in my situation, none of these worked for me.

So, I now have to cross my fingers that MSFT issue a fix to this failed update prior to the May patch Tues, and/or MSFT reverse their decision to cut off support as of the May patch Tues for machines that do not have this Update installed.

A repair install -- making sure to select the option to keep all my settings and programs -- worked for me.

If I would have done that at the beginning of this little adventure instead of at the end, I could have wasted that thirty hours of my life on something decidedly more fun.

    Good luck, whatever you do.

    Hello,

I'm also having issue with this update, although not exactly like this.

Upon rebooting after applying the update I'm stuck on a black screen.

No error code, no BSOD. Just a black screen.

After hitting the reset button 2 times, Diagnostic/Repair kicks in but can't repair.

Sometimes I would get the option to "Restart" (with a message saying that sometimes a Restart could "fix" the issue, which it didn't.

Other times I was offered to Restore (using restore point).

Restore worked a few times but eventually Windows decided that I had no restore point and then I could not restore anymore.

Luckily I had a Macrium Image Backup.

I tried everything suggested here plus a few other things (like creating a new local account with all settings to default, disconnecting every peripheral and non-os drives, disabling OC, disabling onboard peripherals...).

On NVIDIA forums I read that many people have the same issue, or something similar.

I decided to physically remove the card (and drivers, using DDU) and use the integrated gpu.

At that point the 355 update worked.

Then I re-installed (physically) the card, booted in Windows.

    So far so good.

Then, as soon as I started installing the NVIDIA drivers the same black screen would appear.

Not after a reboot (which is not required anyway with nvidia), I'm talking AS SOON AS it starts installing the driver.

I tried with both the NVIDIA installer and via Windows Update with same result.

Sorry if this post is a bit of a mess. 1: english is not my first language and 2: I spent a good 20 hours on this issue, trying everything listed here (dism, manually installing each files in this update etc) plus we have 3 laptops at work with the same issue (one lenovo, one asus, one hp)... my patience is growing very thin.

I understand that the error I'm getting is not exaclty related (no bsod, no error message) so I'm sorry if this is off-topic, but I'll keep an eye open on this thread.

    Thank you
