KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

I have tried EVERY suggestion in this thread on my stock standard, pure Microsoft software, Surface Pro 128 with MC, with no joy.

I have attempted this install via WIndows Update and via offline installer well over 10 times now, with it failing every time.

I have tried the DISM, SFC, winclean, WindowsUpdateDiagnostic etc suggestions, and every time after reboot I get to 99% complete configuring updates before it reverts to 'Failure configuring Windows Updates. Undoing Changes'.

    ARRGGGGHH beyond frustrated.

Here is the frustrating point that some (but not many) have touched upon:

We should not have to be jumping through hoops to fix this issue - Microsoft should halt the update, fix it, send an apology out to end users and be done with it.  While I am by no means comparing this SNAFU to the GM ignition issue in terms of impact, however it is the same issue at it's core - refusing to fix a known issue and take responsibility.

I also (as a good number of you are) am very technical and understand how to execute the steps that are being suggested here - the problem is that there are (way) too many suggestions with some working for some and not for others.

I have always supported MS and defended it to my peers (I am in Technologies as well) but this unacceptable handling, and so far refusal to be actively reactive (sorry about that phraseology ;-) ) strains my credibility with those same said peers.

And do not even get me going on talking to OS tech support !   Enough said on that topic.

FWIW, I spent most of the day with a MS tech in India trying to resolve this.

The long and short of it was...he gave me a key to a Windows 8.1 ISO which he downloaded.

I performed a re-install of Windows 8.1 with the option to save all settings and apps and accounts.

    Reapplied 40 or 50 fixes from 2014.

Then at last 355 went on uneventfully.

YES the corruption was so severe there was no way to simply repair it.

The only thing I lost was, my custom HP video driver, my cleartype settings, and a couple of other little things like being able to start the system without ever giving it a password.  However it took A LONG TIME to reinstall and reapply the fixes.

Hopefully they'll come up with an easier way.

PLEASE give them a couple more weeks to design a less painful process than a re-install!  Don't try to force this thing on yourself, would be my best advice.

I nearly lost all that popcorn I ate over the weekend when he told me we were going to repair re-install, but it turned out OK.  I feel a little better now having done that.
