I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /remove-dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

pause

Mark that has actually worked one of my two failing machines. (I'll have to test the other tonight, but it actually worked after many hours of trying everything.)

Couple of things I noticed in my run and/or things that were different in your steps that I hadn't done before:

    1. When I ran the Fix Windows Update -- I hadn't run this before. When running, it said if found and fixed a few things. It had an "X" for failed updates. I'm assuming that was from previous fails of this update so I just moved on.
    2. I had not run the sfc /scannow prior to this. I did that this time. It ran and returned that it was not able to fix everything. I just moved on and left it at that.
    3. I had run the dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase before, but without the /resetbase. That was a different argument this time than previous unsuccessful runs.
    4. I ran the Diskcleaner as Admin and removed everything (Although I wonder if Deskcleaner was part of the problem that started this all originally that it might have removed an incorrect package in the past because on both failing machines I had run Diskcleaner as admin and removed old system files non longer needed)
    5. I restarted the computer (I had not had this step before in my process at this stage, I'd usually move on into doing the installer.

Anyway, ran the offline installer and it completed, did a full restart. Sat biting my fingernails because in the past it would go all the way to 100% and then say it had to roll back changes. This time though straight to the logon and success.

Hopefully it'll work on my home PC tonight.   I've attempted install of 8.1u1 on 5 machines. 3 went just fine (In fact, all the working ones were an older laptop, netbook and an ultrabook). The ones that failed were the workstations, one an i7 and one a Xeon based.

You have absolutely every right to be spitting mad about this situation, I wasn't saying anyone didn't have a right to be upset.  You should be more than upset.  Microsoft changed the lifecycle on their premier product..  My point is it's not always greener somewhere else.  And I paid >$200 for a Asus laptop with Ubuntu on it thinking that it would be a better experience than if I built my own.  It's not.

I'd recommend that you email Satya.Nadella-at-Microsoft.com (change the -at- to @) and tell him how you feel about Microsoft as a result of this experience.  CC steveb-at-microsoft.com too.

I'm not angry (especially not at you; I thanked you privately for your support and I'm doing it now publicly); Microsoft and its fanboys need to stop the buck where it belongs.

As for the grass being greener? I wouldn't buy a laptop for the OS; I'd buy it for the hardware (and multi-boot as necessary).

My point regarding Linux was that it is free; Windows is not. Microsoft has a fiduciary responsibility to avoid breaking their software with their own updates.

I too am receiving the 80073712 on one of two Dell PCs (both 64 bit) that I have.  The successful install - which occurred with the Automatic Update - was  a desktop XPS 8700 system with the Intel A06 Bios (and an I7 processor).

The machine that is failing is a Dell laptop - Inspiron 15Z with, again, an I7 Intel processor but with the A05 (the latest for this laptop) Bios.

I have tried all of the work-around options, including Manual, DIEMS scanhealth / restoreheath and "cleaning up" the Windows Update Cache - nothing worked.

Additionally, Dell support (yesterday) told me that they know of no Dell specific issues, but that they were "looking into it".

I for one love the update on the one machine that it is installed on and can only hope that MS will resolve the issue or provide a fix that really works.

    Sigh.

    Rick
