I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

cleanmgr.exe

Echo Cleanup complete

    Solved!

After many hours I finally installed KB2919355 update.  I tried all the solutions from previous posts both with Windows Update and standalone installers many times with no success. I don't really know what became the key point of bringing the smile to my face, because it's nothing new. Maybe just the order of commands, but it worked. So, these are my steps:

    1. Download offline installers:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335 2. Fix Windows Update:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/ 3. Scan Windows system components:

    sfc /scannow 4. Remove KB2919355 package:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14 5. Clean up the WinSxS folder:

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase 6. Clean up disk with system files remove:

cleanmgr.exe 7. Restart computer 8. Run offline installer:

    Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu

Success! with prompt to restart computer once again and showing new Metro app shortcut on my taskbar.

    Big shame to Microsoft!

Open the file CBS.log in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\

If you can't open it, your installer may still be working. Just right-click, create a copy and read that.

Search for string Error. It may say that an object (a folder) in the file system is missing.

I found that I need to create both these:

    C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows**<Start Menu>**\Programs\System Tools

<Start Menu> may be in your local language if you have a non-English language version

First time around I only saw the first folder mentioned, that's because it gives up after failing on the first. Create both and save some time.

This finally worked for me; good luck.
