KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /remove-dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

IMPORTANT: Before doing that you must ensure that KB2919442 is installed on your system, since this is a pre-requisite to install Windows 8.1 Update.

If it is not installed, first of all install that update from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=42162

IMPORTANT # 2: You must ensure to follow EXACTLY this installation order:

    KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2937592, KB2938439 and finally KB2934018

Really? Are you kidding us? I really do think you have your heart in the right place and only want to help and that´s beautiful!... But the first one KB2919355 WON´T INSTALL, neither standalone download nor Windows Update... that´s the whole point!

I really wish a moderator could chip in and clean out the threads... it´s getting cluttered.

    Hi MangeK,

I don't understand the tone of your reply.

I can assure you that I have successfully installed KB2919355 twice on two different systems today, using the standalone download!

This ONLY worked after I made a system restore to pre-April 8th, as I clearly described in my post.

I can also tell you that - BEFORE doing the system restore - I had tried to install KB2919355 probably 20 times, both via Windows Update and via standalone download, and it it did NOT work, since the original attempt to install Windows 8.1 Update via Windows Update corrupted my sistems.

But now it worked very smoothly!

To add some other info, I also know about luckly people who could successfully install Windows 8.1 Update via Windows Update with no issues at all, so you really cannot say that KB2919355 won't install, since that is not true.

This did not work for me on my Acer Aspire V5. Tried it twice, and followed instructions to the letter. It failed while trying to install the KB2919355 file. Took about an hour, and the installation blue line went to 100% finally. Then it failed! Just like when I tried to do it thru Windows Update originally. I then did the DISM stuff, and the Store is corrupted again. Geeez!

So, it looks like it's not a Windows Update problem, and more is involved here. Too bad, I had high hopes for your solution. I now did a system restore again, and will wait for our friends from MS to do something.....

    Hi All,

After trying all the possible solutions you kindly shared on this thread, unfortunately none of them worked for me.

So I am sharing the solution I found, which worked fine for me on two different ASUS systems (one ROG notebook and one Ultrabook).

I made a system restore to a point pre-Windows 8.1 Update failure (in my case it was dates April 8th).

At this point I installed manually and one by one (NOT via Windows Update) each of the .msu files which are part of Windows 8.1 Update, and which you can download from the Microsoft web site from here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=42335

IMPORTANT: Before doing that you must ensure that KB2919442 is installed on your system, since this is a pre-requisite to install Windows 8.1 Update.

If it is not installed, first of all install that update from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=42162

IMPORTANT # 2: You must ensure to follow EXACTLY this installation order:

    KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2937592, KB2938439 and finally KB2934018.

IMPORTANT # 3: After installing each one of those, you need to restart your PC. Please note that the biggest one - KB2919355 - can take a lot of time for full system restart, just allow Windows to complete all necessary post-installation operations.

As a final consideration, due to my personal experience with unsuccessful attempts to install Windows 8.1 Update on two different systems, I came to this conclusions: The reason of all the time-consuming issues we are all experiencing or have experienced since April 8th is Microsoft's fault. There was nothing wrong or damaged on our systems (in general, of course some systems might have already been corrupted before installing the update). It was the failed attempts to install Windows 8.1 Update via Windows Update which somehow damaged our systems, and in most cases none of the clever workarounds/solutions I've seen here worked.

Magically after restoring system to a pre-Windows 8.1 Update state, and by installing that update via the .msu install packages downloaded from the Microsof site and NOT via Windows Update, everything worked perfectly and our systems are no longer damaged or corrupted, and both shine with a brand new Windows 8.1 Update (which is a nice update, by the way for those who never liked the Metro/Modern UI).

And, especially, there's no need to reinstall the whole Win 8 or Win 8.1 from scratch, loosing all our programs, apps and personalization and therefore needing full working days to bring back machine configuration to actual status.

I can tell you for sure that my solution has already worked fine for few friends/colleagues of mine here in Italy.

I do hope it can help at least some of you to solve this extremely annoying and time-consuming issue.

I've been struggling with it since April 8th and I've wasted all my Saturday on that, but thank goodness I succeeded.

Please let me know if the above is working for you, too, I'd be curious to know.

    Good luck!

I'm happy to report that after numerous attempts at fixing 355 I finally have a working version of 8.1 Update 1 but the process was far from easy.

I had tried all the options suggested on this board without success. It would get to 20% and then it would fail followed by an un-doing.

I decided to call Microsoft support who tried to help but ended up referring me to an escalation engineer. He told me that he had a solution and that was to refresh my install using a USB ISO image I had. He directed me to run setup.exe from within the Windows environment and said he'd call back in a couple of hours. After the refresh I was happy all my applications were left untouched but my happiness didn't last as I still couldn't install 355. I tried the refresh process again but again no luck. I even noticed that pre 355 updates were now failing at 20%.

What in the **** has MS done I kept on asking myself.

Anyway, after 5 more attempts at refreshing I decided to give in and refresh without keeping my apps, settings etc. It was a hard decision as felt that MS should have tested 355 a little more to avoid the headaches we're all having but I needed to move past this otherwise I was going to put more dents in the wall with my head. So now with a 'clean' refresh I was looking forward to seeing a successful install of 355. Would you believe that it failed again at 20% AGAIN!!!!

I was lost for words and looking hard at a space on the wall to headbutt. I just couldn't understand how a fresh install was failing. Anyway, I tried it again just in case but had the same results.

Finally I decided to boot from the USB Image instead of the desktop, format the destination drive to ensure nothing was left and try again. Finally Success!!! :) 355 installed without any problems. It only took 3 days of my life that I'll never get back but at least it worked. I do have to re-install all my apps etc but I can now at least sleep again which I guess some MS engineers are rightfully missing at the moment.

I suspect that this isn't going to be an easy or quick fix for them to produce as there seems to be multiple problems, but they can't expect everyone affected to flatten their PC and start again.

Anyway, good luck to you all.
