KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

For those who unseccessfully tried a similar method but using the command prompt:

Run CMD as administrator (Go to start screen, all apps, search CMD, right-click and select run as administrator)

Enter: dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

When step 2 has completed, enter: dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

This might depend on the fact that yours system is 32 bit so it won't recognize Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14 since that's the package for 64 bit computers.

So my method might work for them instead.

In fact my method does not imply using the command prompt at all, but simply to roll back to a previous system restore point (prior to the first attempts of installing Windows 8.1 Update). The advantages are that the system restore to a previous point should take care automatically to remove all traces and remains of the failed install attempt.

After that, you might try to manually install all the components which make up Windows 8.1 Update.

Don't use Windows Update since it will corrupt your system again!

Use the single standalone install packages instead (.msu files),which you can download from the Microsoft web site from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=42335

IMPORTANT: Before doing that you must ensure that KB2919442 is installed on your system, since this is a pre-requisite to install Windows 8.1 Update.

If it is not installed, first of all install that update from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=42162

IMPORTANT # 2: You must ensure to follow EXACTLY this installation order:

KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2937592, KB2938439 and finally KB2934018 (some users pointed out that KB numbers might vary. These KB#s apply to 64 bit systems. If you have a 32 bit system they could be different).

IMPORTANT # 3: After installing each one of those, you need to restart your PC. Please note that the biggest one - KB2919355 - can take a lot of time for full system restart, just allow Windows to complete all necessary post-installation operations.

I have an Ubuntu box that is failing to update. My "dependency packages" are not correct. My what? It's not easier in Linux. He knows it. Therefore to him it's easy.

He's been working with computers for a very long time...he's used different Linux packages and of course he has done some development work. He really likes it over MS...I like MS when it works...which is most of the time which is why I haven't migrated yet but issues like this major installation issue make it very frustrating to run MS as you can plainly see from the frustration expressed in these forums. Frankly I love Windows 8.1 better than XP and 7 and I really loved XP...had it for seven years. I didn't want to use Windows 7(forget about Vista...I heard so many complaints about that I didn't even want to try it.) I was happy with 7 when it came pre-installed on my HP Phenom desktop. I didn't want to switch to 8 but that too came installed with my new Dell laptop. I didn't have any issues upgrading to 8.1 and once I found my way around 8.1 I loved it very much...and I have a mouse and keyboard not a touch screen.
