black screen during calling with the lumia 930

I just received the lumia 930 a few days ago. Perfect device however every time I want to make a call the screen goes black. I had a lumia 920 without this problem. Is there a solution? (without blowing the dust, restoring to factory settings or bringing the device back to the store?). This is such a devastating problem as it is almost impossible to just answer the phone. A have no protective cover etc.

Final Update.

The shop replaced my Nokia 930 with a new one.

In the shop we found out that the screen in the sensor area was wobbly. LIkely that this was the defect that triggered the proximity sensor.

So, if you have issues with proximity sensor, there is one option only... go to service.

    Eath4306, so difficult to say.

    I saw that if I use a cloth to clean (or simulate cleaning the display on top of the sensor) and bright light then it comes back for a few seconds... enough to be able to end the call. Not able in any way to dial keys as for example to join a conference call.

    I also checked to see if is possible to make an application to disable the sensor... However, so far I couldn't see such option. Every application will ask OS to provide access to devices, and no other app can interfere there. Although I have plan to just build an app to test all phone sensors.

    This proximity sensor seems very sensitive. It could be calibration issue, which then should be fixed by firmware. But Microsoft should consider this and at least allow the possibility to disable in the Phone app the proximity feature. I could live very well without it. In the past I was just pressing the power button and screen will go off.

    So, Microsoft/Nokia, here are people that believe in you! Do not disappoint us!

    Here an update, after I did some more research

    • there are two sensors in that region, one next to each other: one for ambient light and one for proximity
    • programatically you cannot access the proximity sensor (hyronically... becuase it is too dangerous to play with it)
    • there was (maybe is one now too, but is hidden for the public) a diagnostic application from Nokia - On-Device Diagnostic tool, which was working in the previous Lumia phones, but from 928 up is not available anymore
    • the nice thing about such Diagnostic tool is that can show you the status of proximity sensor (among many other things) as well as possibility to recalibrate the sensor

    Conclusion:

    • only Service people could fix it
    • or if you have the possibility replace it with a new one
    • i do not really believe in service it yourslef, even if you open it and clean the sensor - it seems that requires firmware update or a way to change the sensor sensitivity

    Hi All. Bought the 930 recently and just had the same problem. Was ok at first though. And since I' ve loaded in and configured all my emails,apps, etc in the last 15 days, I dread going in to service. If they swap a new phone for me, I'd have to start all over again. Is there a possibility that it could be due to firmware?

    Brand new phone with OS version 8.10.12397.895.

    After days of frustration it turns out that the screen is wobbly. The only work-around is to press the proximity sensor area or the usual double press the ON/OFF button.

    So, either the sensor is way too sensitive or the build quality is not what is should be...
