I just received the lumia 930 a few days ago. Perfect device however every time I want to make a call the screen goes black. I had a lumia 920 without this problem. Is there a solution? (without blowing the dust, restoring to factory settings or bringing the device back to the store?). This is such a devastating problem as it is almost impossible to just answer the phone. A have no protective cover etc.

Final Update.
The shop replaced my Nokia 930 with a new one.
In the shop we found out that the screen in the sensor area was wobbly. LIkely that this was the defect that triggered the proximity sensor.
So, if you have issues with proximity sensor, there is one option only... go to service.

Can I give some advise. Remove your phone from any case and remove any screen protector. Look at the level of the glass screen around the perimeter of the frame. If like mine you will notice in the upper right hand corner (above the word Nokia) you may see the glass is slightly lifted compared to the top left hand side!!..perhaps 0.5mm to 1mm!!
Either way this is enough for the problem to occur and I have verified it but putting my phone in a case that rests on the edge of the glass and hold it down (no black screen problem now!!).
My phone is approximately 6 months old.
I beleive this is a manfacturing defect with the adhesive tape used to bond the curved glass screen to this the chassis.
I will be sending mine in for repair but at present I can't be without it until I get a temp phone.

This type of fault needs to be inspected and repaired by the Nokia service centre. You can book a repair with the Nokia service centre directly by using the support section of the Nokia website.
I had my phone fixed and have had no problem since.

Had 930 for 2 weeks. Phone goes black and unresponsive when making a call until other person hangs up or their voice mail runs out of space. Unusable as a phone. Return and money back?

I found a really easy solution to the proximity sensor problem discussed in this topic.
I have a lumia 930 since august, but the proximity sensor problem just came along in the past few weeks. I have been testing a lot of new apps in that period, so I thought one of the apps was faulty for the error. Since double tap to wake up didn't work either, I checked if it was on (in the settings). Double tap to wake was on, so I turned it off, and on again, and tadaaa, now I have a working proximity sensor, and double tap to wake also works.
I guess some of the apps have influence on this error. This is good news, since it can be handled by an update in the near future. However the fact, that one of the 3rd party apps can modify a system setting like this, is frightening. Windows phone was always a really stable operating system, and I would really mind, if this kind of access caused vulnerablity like described in this topic.
I hope my solution helps you guys, because I know how frustrating it is, when you can't access the end call button at the end of a phonecall.

Unfortunately, this fix didn't last too long. :( It was only working for a day, so maybe it was a lucky coincidence.
