How to Disable “Update to Windows 8.1 for Free” Notification in Windows 8 Store?

Description

If you are tired of seeing “Update to Windows 8.1 for Free” notification then it’s time to disable it. Get rid of these regular prompts to upgrade to Windows 8.1 for free.

Solution:

There are two ways to disable "Update to Windows 8.1 for Free" notification message in Windows 8:

Method 1: Using Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)

  1. Press “WIN+R” keys together to launch RUN dialog box and type “gpedit.msc.” Then press “Enter.”
  2. “Group Policy Editor” gets open.
  3. Go to: 

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Store

  1. On the right-side pane, double-click “Turn off the offer to update to the latest version of Windows" option and set its value to "Enabled".

It will disable the Windows 8.1 free update installation notifications.

Method 2: Using Registry Editor (regedit)

You can do the same thing using Registry Editor instead of Group Policy Editor. Follow the below steps:

  1. Launch RUN dialog box by pressing “WIN+R” and type “regedit” and press “Enter”.
  2. “Registry Editor” gets open.
  3. Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsStore

If you don’t find the above key then create it manually.

  1. Choose “WindowsStore” key and in right-side pane, create a new DWORD DisableOSUpgrade and set its value to 1.

5.       Now, close “Registry Editor” and log off or restart Windows.

Congrats, you have successfully disabled those notifications

    Hi, Shawn, thank you for your reply.

    The last roadblock for me installing Windows 8.1 is whether other users in my family can access the OneDrive folder when logged into their own Microsoft account on their 8.1 machine.

    Is there a way for my entire family to access the same OneDrive account without having to log into their own machine with my MS account?

    Hello mbrown1465,

    In order for you to use the group policy editor (gpedit) you need to be running Windows 8/8.1 Pro or Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise. The standard version of Windows 8 does not include gpedit.

    Having said that, I have to agree with Shawn. I too cannot see why anyone would not want to update to Windows 8.1

    Depends what you mean by "access".  There's been no changes, it works the same way that OneDrive (SkyDrive) has always worked.  In other words, it still has the requirement that offline access is only possible if the sync engine (the icon by the clock) is logged-in using the account that owns the files.

    But if they just want to access it at OneDrive.com, they don't need the password for the account that owns the files, they can just click the "shared with me" and see all the files you've shared.

    Because my laptop is not compatable for 8.1..The headache of making it works with windows 8 has been much more than enough.  Windows 8.1 DID NOT WORK!!!!!

    Sorry you had trouble on your system. Post the error message you got when installing 8.1 and well help you get it fixed up.
