Original Title: Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install

I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now.  I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day.  Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window.  The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s.  After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020.  From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.

Now I looked in the Windows update history to see if the other required updates like KB2919442,**** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 were installed and they aren't in the update history.  I thought they were installed already for KB2919355 to be installed.  Are all of these update files included in the KF2919355 update that pops up in the windows update?

Also, my update history can is only up to date in the control panel and doesn't show any updates installed in the modern PC settings app.  Did windows update fail to properly install updates required before trying to install later updates? What can and can't I install right now?

So far I've manually downloaded the links to  KB2919355, KB2919442, **** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 posted in this thread:

I haven't installed anything yet.

Any help on why nothing has worked or installed properly?

(Update (5/5/14):  A fix for KB2919355 has been released that will resolve some customers receiving Error 80073712 when installing this update.  This fix is now included as part of KB2919355 and will install the next time you attempt to install Windows Updates. When I went to that Microsoft "Windows 8.1 Update for x64 - based systems (KB2919344) page it did not behave as described. I was given no choices as to which msu files I wanted to download. But this morning I went back to it and its looks had changed. So I tried it again. And this time I could select each msu and got them downloaded.

But, back to the original automatic download & install of KB2919344 for a moment...  When that automatic update failed on my machine I found that the Component Store of this machine was corrupted. I had to run DISM Scanheath two or three times (with a full system restart after each time) before it came back and said my Component Store was repairable. I then ran DISM Restorehealth and lo and behold it said it had repaired the Component Store. Good time to create a Restore Point.

To make a long story short(er) I did the manual installation of all 5 KB's and in the required order with a Restart after each one. Took a fairly long time but I can honestly say that my Windows 8.1 has been updated properly.

Thanks to the original poster for pointing out that page.

I suspect that once my Component Store got corrupted no updates would have worked.

    Hi:

I tried the command line as administrator on my 64 bit Intel Asus VivoBook S200E-RHI3T73 laptop:

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    dism /online /remove-package/packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

I then did a clean boot and tried to install KB2919355 via Windows update. It reported a successful install but upon reboot nothing had changed. So I repeated the process and tried with the manual update and the installation failed once again.

Unfortunately running the update wiped out my restore points. I should note that the first step I took on April 8 after the update was restoring, trying again with no luck.

Then I took my friend's identical laptop, on which Windows update had only been attempted once and restored to just before the update and tried via Windows update. It failed and the restore points were gone. KB2919355 wants to install each time he shuts down or starts but fails.

My sister was able to update her laptop without a problem but three Asus, one Sony ultrabook and one Dell laptop all will not update.

I have tried everything possible at this point, having spent most of my time, in vain, since the update was released trying to fix the problem. I'm giving up and will wait for a fix from Microsoft.

    Empty-handed,

    Tom
