Original Title: Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install

I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now.  I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day.  Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window.  The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s.  After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020.  From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.

Now I looked in the Windows update history to see if the other required updates like KB2919442,**** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 were installed and they aren't in the update history.  I thought they were installed already for KB2919355 to be installed.  Are all of these update files included in the KF2919355 update that pops up in the windows update?

Also, my update history can is only up to date in the control panel and doesn't show any updates installed in the modern PC settings app.  Did windows update fail to properly install updates required before trying to install later updates? What can and can't I install right now?

So far I've manually downloaded the links to  KB2919355, KB2919442, **** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 posted in this thread:

I haven't installed anything yet.

Any help on why nothing has worked or installed properly?

(Update (5/5/14):  A fix for KB2919355 has been released that will resolve some customers receiving Error 80073712 when installing this update.  This fix is now included as part of KB2919355 and will install the next time you attempt to install Windows Updates. Enter cmd in the search box, and then right-click or press and holdCommand Prompt. 3. Tap or click Run as administrator**.** 4. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type one of the following commands depending on your version of Windows, and then press Enter. Don't include a line break as shown here. - If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

Nothing of mine is corrupted when I try the steps but it still fails to install the update saying that it can't install the update and it's rolling it back.  I am hoping that MS will fix this mess.  I am tired of downloading the update and it not working.  It's a good thing I don't have a datacap because if I did this would take a big chunk of it.  I think that MS should fix this and send out discs to everyone this has affected...at no charge of course.  I think it's also a horrible business practice that they haven't acknowledged the issues and apologized to their customers.  I have written in these threads and I have tweeted to MS and written on their facebook page but nothing.  This may possibly be the last Windows OS I run.  Do they really think this is good business?

Here is the fix in better presentation on web site.

And NO the AMD does NOT refer to AMD chip.  I have Intel....

The problem is a Windows OS problem, NOT  a hardware issue anyway.

Windows 8.1 Update: KB2919355 Error 80073712 Potential Fix Tags: Windows 8.1 Update KB2919355 Error 80073712 Potential Fix

While trying to update Windows 8.1 64bit to the latest updated (dubbed 8.1 update 1), I received the 80073712 error when trying to install.

A post on this page of the Microsoft community forum by 'MrBill666' worked for me, which involves:

    1. Run CMD as administator (Go to start screen, all apps, search CMD, right-click and select run as administrator)
    2. Enter:dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14
    3. When step 2 has completed, enter: dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
    4. Retry the update!

Mrbill666 is absolutely correct.  My machine is an ASUS laptop with 64 bit Intel i7 chip.  His solution worked for me, as I already noted.

    Success! ?

After days of trying with repeated automated and manual attemps using dism.exe and sfc scans and just about everything suggested in this thread.

Many hours and lots of time waiting for downloads to complete (country town In South Africa). I got error 80073712 every time right at the end of installing KB2919355. I finally got the update applied.

My computer: Lenovo ideacentre 540p. It came with windows 8 and I upgraded to 8.1 pro (64 bits) when that came out. I keep my computer Windows up-to-date almost twice a week.

What I did (with a normal reboot after literally every step, just to make sure):

    1. Rolled back to a restore point I had for the 23rd of March 2014. This was just before a security update (unfortunately forgot and lost the number of that update). It was a restore point created by Windows.
    2. Did some general tests and had to fix these:
      1. Windows Media Player as it would not play mp4s (deactivate, reboot, activate)
      2. Office 365 was de-activated, fixed by re-activating on website
      3. Everything else seemed more or less fine but some metro apps were disabled (like Solitaire collection and others all had little black crosses in the tile corner) but I just left those.
    3. Then started windows update (win 8 charm screen) and installed auto selected 6 upgrades. (KB2919355 not included or shown, as I guess these were all pre-requisites).
    4. Rebooted. Then started windows update (control panel version) and checked for updates. Showed KB2919355 but this time bigger than 800 MB, so not the 702 MB version I got via manual updates. But I guess it had combined stuff that I previously had separate.
    5. Did the update. Completed fine.
    6. Continued with reboot. Showed updating with rotating animation thing.
    7. Rebooted and all done. New features all there and update status fine.
    8. All the disabled metro apps working again.

Now obviously I'm happy. Obsession to get it done all over but darn, this was some **** way of getting an update to apply.
