Original Title: Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install

I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now.  I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day.  Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window.  The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s.  After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020.  From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.

Now I looked in the Windows update history to see if the other required updates like KB2919442,**** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 were installed and they aren't in the update history.  I thought they were installed already for KB2919355 to be installed.  Are all of these update files included in the KF2919355 update that pops up in the windows update?

Also, my update history can is only up to date in the control panel and doesn't show any updates installed in the modern PC settings app.  Did windows update fail to properly install updates required before trying to install later updates? What can and can't I install right now?

So far I've manually downloaded the links to  KB2919355, KB2919442, **** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 posted in this thread:

I haven't installed anything yet.

Any help on why nothing has worked or installed properly?

(Update (5/5/14):  A fix for KB2919355 has been released that will resolve some customers receiving Error 80073712 when installing this update.  This fix is now included as part of KB2919355 and will install the next time you attempt to install Windows Updates. The troubleshooting steps listed below have been revised to include this additional fix.

You can find additional guidance for troubleshooting problems when installing the update atInstall the latest Windows 8.1 Update.

If you receive Error 80073712 when installing KB2919355:

(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then clickSearch.) 2. Enter cmd in the search box, and then right-click or press and holdCommand Prompt. 3. Tap or click Run as administrator**.** 4. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type one of the following commands depending on your version of Windows, and then press Enter. Don't include a line break as shown here. - If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

I have the same issue. Tried the "Microsoft Update" way, and after three tims failure without clear guidance, deactivating everything like virus scanners and whatever, all interrrupted by a re-download of the full 800MB package as the PC doesn't cache the downloaded update when the install fails, then downloaded the five packages KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2937592, KB2938439 and KB2934018. KB2919355 fails to install.

Then tried Windows Update Troubleshooter, says all problems havel been fixed.

Tried again to install KB2919355, failed.

    Then tried WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab

    which says:

"Problems installing recent updates - not fixed"

    • Repair windowsupdate - completed

"Check for missing or corrupt files - detected"

repair missing or corrup files - completed

SFC output - Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations

    "Windows update error 0x80ß073712"

    • Resetting Windows Update data store - completed

"Some security settings are missing or have been changed - fixed"

"Service registration is missing or corrup - fixed"

Tried again to install KB2919355, failed.

Tried SFC /scannow, says no corrupted resources found.

Tried again to install KB2919355, failed.

    Then tried

    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

    which says:

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

    Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    Image Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    [==========================100.0%==========================]

    The component store is repairable.

    The operation completed successfully.

    Then I tried:

    C:\windows\system32>dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

    Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    Image Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    [==========================100.0%==========================]

The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired.

    Error: 0x800f081f

DISM failed. No operation was performed.

For more information, review the log file.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

As much as I can see from 6778 lines of log file - I am really not an expert and I have no IT department to help me - here are some errors:

    2014-04-11 12:58:05, Error                 DISM   DISM Package Manager: PID=10404 TID=4388 Failed while processing command cleanup-image. - CPackageManagerCLIHandler::ExecuteCmdLine(hr:0x800f081f)

2014-04-11 12:58:05, Error                 DISM   DISM.EXE: DISM Package Manager processed the command line but failed. HRESULT=800F081F

but maybe the information is hidden somewhere in the other 6776 lines of log file which I fail to interpret.

Looking at some logs it seems that the problem is that the hash validation fails on some file on an OKIC530 laser printer driver file which I needed to install as the Win8.1 drivers were not really functional to put the printer in operationb, but I fail to have the time nor the knowledge to go into the depth of Windows DLLs to fix something like this.

I must say I am depressed that Microsoft does not manage to publish a workable update for Windows 8.1 on a computer that is just 2 months old and has only standard software and usual driver software installed. I am unable to go back to zero and refresh the whole PC with a plain restore and invest two days reinstalingl all software just to update Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1u1. I guess this means my computer will run infinetly with Win8.1 without update 1.

This is so unprofessional. I start to understand why more and more people change to MACs.

If anyone can give me guidance what to do, other than "restore your notebook and start from scratch" or "fix this and that INI file", greatly appreciated. I am completely lost here.

My 64 bit machine came with Windows 8.0 right out of the box. When, in the store,  I balked at the Start Screen splattered with Tiles, the sales person suggested to me that the first thing I do is to download the free Classic Start Menu.

On the day I brought this machine home running Windows 8.0 and subsequent update to 8.1 I've had the full capability of what Microsoft has been touting with this stupid Windows 8.1 Update. Namely a fully functional Start button (in selectable XP, Vista, or Win 7 style), bootable directly to the Desktop Screen.

Quite frankly I couldn't care less weather this machine ever gets updated with KB2919355 or not. Nor do I care if Microsoft doesn't update the software in the future because of it. Most folks I know, and myself, dread doing a Windows Update. One never knows with Microsoft products whether the system will run ok after.

Dear Microsoft: Its early days yet. You have a few weeks to get this problem resolved so that your customers can simply retry the Update and have it work. But every day you delay you will lose even more and more market share. IOS and Android are beckoning. Don't play stupid and mute. Get it fixed.

Oh, and lest I forget to mention it...

Dear Microsoft: We know you had your customer's best interests in mind when you built in all those Troubleshooters and utilities that are supposed to detect problems and correct them. Thank you for thinking about us.

But in case you don't realize it, I have never ever had one of those Troubleshooters ever resolve an issue. And all those utilities you suggest we use to diagnose or correct this update issue? None of them resolve it. So please, stop suggesting we use them. Quite frankly I think that all they do is start up, wait for a time period to make it look like their actually working on something, and then produce a useless message.

Your KB2919355 update contains a problem in that it will not install on certain machines. No one knows why it fails on some machines and installs on others.
