Original Title: Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install

I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now.  I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day.  Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window.  The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s.  After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020.  From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.

Now I looked in the Windows update history to see if the other required updates like KB2919442,**** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 were installed and they aren't in the update history.  I thought they were installed already for KB2919355 to be installed.  Are all of these update files included in the KF2919355 update that pops up in the windows update?

Also, my update history can is only up to date in the control panel and doesn't show any updates installed in the modern PC settings app.  Did windows update fail to properly install updates required before trying to install later updates? What can and can't I install right now?

So far I've manually downloaded the links to  KB2919355, KB2919442, **** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 posted in this thread:

I haven't installed anything yet.

Any help on why nothing has worked or installed properly?

(Update (5/5/14):  A fix for KB2919355 has been released that will resolve some customers receiving Error 80073712 when installing this update.  This fix is now included as part of KB2919355 and will install the next time you attempt to install Windows Updates. I had the same problem as I've seen others report here. I tried all the listed things to try to fix it, but to no avail.  Good news is I did fix it !!  I downloaded an 8.1 windows install, expanded it in a folder, and clicked on setup. Setup ran giving me the option to keep all my files and settings including apps, and most importantly desktop apps. I had to give setup my license key, it ran and all was good !!

The nice thing about this approach compared to "refresh" or ""remove and reinstall" is I keep all my apps and all my settings (eg outlook and all my accounts etc). Anyway, then I ran windows update, had 40 or so updates, did them, then again, then a couple more, then the 8.1 update and a couple more.

My system faults prior to this seem very similar to everyone else. I think mine was a 8.0 updated to a 8.1. Has Office 2010 and 2013 ( if only they'd fix those colours in 2013 I could dump 2010 !!). I'm pretty sure I've done restore rollbacks in the past, and went I did a recimg /showcurrent there was no recover image. Fixing that didn't change anything though, only a windows repair.

    Hope this helps

Since everything else didn't help me (Win 8.1 Pro Media Center, updated from Win 8 Pro MC, originally installed as multiboot environment together with XP MCE and Win 7), this "repair" was the weapon of choice, since I started with errors while updating, more errors and nothing to restore using DISM and so on, and finally missing files for a refresh:

Get your Win 8.1 iso, mount it and run setup.

Enter your product key (things are might getting difficult here, depending on your "windows history" -> generic key) and proceed with settings and apps untouched.

After some cups of coffee, several reboots and installing the missed updates since Win 8.1 vanilla, everything is installing and working fine without errors!

Hopefully, MS will fix the native update for everyone else and those without time and technical understanding...

I too got a failed install of KB2919355 with error 80073712 on my 64 bit machine.

These 5 prerequisite updates - as generated by Windows Update - were downloaded and installed first...

    KB2942844

    KB2936068

    KB890830

    KB2939087

    KB2922229

Then Windows Update was instructed to download and install KB2919355. Download was successful but the install failed with error 80073712.

Did Troubleshooter which confirmed the failure. None of the so-called fixes worked.

Obviously what was downloaded was bad. If Microsoft patches the update at their end will I get that patched update if I tell it to Retry - yet again?
