Original Title: Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install

I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now.  I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day.  Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window.  The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s.  After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020.  From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.

Now I looked in the Windows update history to see if the other required updates like KB2919442,**** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 were installed and they aren't in the update history.  I thought they were installed already for KB2919355 to be installed.  Are all of these update files included in the KF2919355 update that pops up in the windows update?

Also, my update history can is only up to date in the control panel and doesn't show any updates installed in the modern PC settings app.  Did windows update fail to properly install updates required before trying to install later updates? What can and can't I install right now?

So far I've manually downloaded the links to  KB2919355, KB2919442, **** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 posted in this thread:

I haven't installed anything yet.

Any help on why nothing has worked or installed properly?

(Update (5/5/14):  A fix for KB2919355 has been released that will resolve some customers receiving Error 80073712 when installing this update.  This fix is now included as part of KB2919355 and will install the next time you attempt to install Windows Updates. I "fixed" my Lenovo desktop which would not install the Windows 8.1 update by restoring my last Windows 7 Image backup, following by several rounds of Windows Update until there were no more updates. And then running the Windows 8 Installer, followed by several rounds of Windows Update until there were no more updates, then ran the Windows 8.1 upgrade from App Store, followed by several rounds of Windows Update until there were no more updates. At this point my computer is running Windows 8.1 and appears to have loaded the update.

I decided to restore from Windows 7 Image after I tried an online session with Microsoft support, where he took control of my desktop and tried several "fixes", none of which worked (the Windows 8.1 update still failed to install with error). Essentially, he gave up, so I decided to go back to Windows 7.

I had some free time this weekend and so decided to try upgrade to Windows 8 (and 8.1) again. Kept all programs and personal files, just like before.

Darned if I know why the Windows 8.1 update worked this time, but failed before. Surely I was starting from the same state of the hard drive, since it worked the second time after I restored my own full Windows 7 Image backup. Maybe Microsoft "improved" the Windows Update files recently?

It is puzzling that microsoft can't manage these updates and their problems without appearing arrogant and stupid. When they know there's problems with updates could they not send us anemail with suggested fixes - or even send an email saying "be patient, we'll send a fix soon"? For what it's worth here's what I did on my HP Pavilion running 8.1 (64bit).

    1. ran troubleshooter
    2. ran troubleshooter again
    3. re-tried install - fail
    4. restarted, re-tried - fail
    5. tried the command prompt suggestions
    6. retried install - fail
    7. restarted
    8. retried install - fail
    9. TURNED OFF NORTON ANTI VIRUS (should I have done that earlier?)
    10. re-ran troubleshooter - took ages - 45 mins I think - still said had not fixed install problem but did say had fixed error 0 x 80073712
    11. retried install - success!!!!

I have now inspected my windows update history and seem to have tried this install very many times. Thats quite a lot of data. Should I send microsoft a bill for the excess data downloaded? It is frustrating that every time the install is re-tried it re-downloads the whole thing.
