Original Title: Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install

I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now.  I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day.  Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window.  The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s.  After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020.  From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.

Now I looked in the Windows update history to see if the other required updates like KB2919442,**** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 were installed and they aren't in the update history.  I thought they were installed already for KB2919355 to be installed.  Are all of these update files included in the KF2919355 update that pops up in the windows update?

Also, my update history can is only up to date in the control panel and doesn't show any updates installed in the modern PC settings app.  Did windows update fail to properly install updates required before trying to install later updates? What can and can't I install right now?

So far I've manually downloaded the links to  KB2919355, KB2919442, **** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 posted in this thread:

I haven't installed anything yet.

Any help on why nothing has worked or installed properly?

(Update (5/5/14):  A fix for KB2919355 has been released that will resolve some customers receiving Error 80073712 when installing this update.  This fix is now included as part of KB2919355 and will install the next time you attempt to install Windows Updates. The troubleshooting steps listed below have been revised to include this additional fix.

You can find additional guidance for troubleshooting problems when installing the update atInstall the latest Windows 8.1 Update.

If you receive Error 80073712 when installing KB2919355:

(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then clickSearch.) 2. Enter cmd in the search box, and then right-click or press and holdCommand Prompt. 3. Tap or click Run as administrator**.** 4. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type one of the following commands depending on your version of Windows, and then press Enter. Don't include a line break as shown here. - If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

Well, I kind of saw this coming about ten years ago... "IMAGINE THIS":

      • - - M$ has reached the CRITICAL MASS - there are now not enough talented programmers left working there to actually collectively UNDERSTAND the multiple-million-lines-of-code leviathan that is "Windows". I've been using the official M$ coding tools ("Visual Studio") for years - and every year they get more and more ABSTRACTED... basically they try to hide everything, and almost try to do the programming for you. Those "real programmers" who haven't retired already have been gradually lured away to work for Google. And all that is left at Redmond is a crowd of underachieving 20-somethings who only really had a vague idea of what's under the hood, and never had the work ethic to get caught up. And now it's TOO LATE, obviously!!

    Hi,

I just finished installing the update without any problem...

However, the download did stop for about 5 minutes at 23%... there was still plenty of disk activity though.

It stopped again at 92% for about 2 minutes, and the went straight to "Installing"

    Total time about 15 minutes....

One thing I did notice is that before I did the KB2919355 there were several others I had to install before it showed up in Windows Updates... one was for Windows Defender that FAILED the first time, and then succeeded the second time.

After doing about 10 updates, another one showed up for IE11 at the same time as KB2919355...

    I installed it seperately first...

I don't have a clue as to why you are having different issues, but thought I would mention this stuff so you might have an idea of some things to look out for...

I'm having problem installing one Windows Defender update (KB2894853) with error code 80070003, and the big Win8.1 update (KB2919355) with error code 80073712 also.   I don't know if they are interelated but I've tried both dozens of times, ran WinUpDiag tool, disk cleanup, removed files in a windows update software folder, ran the DISM commands - to no change.     I am hesitant to rebuild my system back to Win 8.0.   I've wasted a lot of time on this already and I'm not seeing any working solutions.   Microsoft please fix this soon.

    Solved!

After many hours I finally installed KB2919355 update.  I tried all the solutions from previous posts both with Windows Update and standalone installers many times with no success. I don't really know what became the key point of bringing the smile to my face, because it's nothing new. Maybe just the order of commands, but it worked. So, these are my steps:

    1. Download offline installers:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335 2. Fix Windows Update:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/ 3. Scan Windows system components:

    sfc /scannow 4. Remove KB2919355 package:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14 5. Clean up the WinSxS folder:

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase 6. Clean up disk with system files remove:

cleanmgr.exe 7. Restart computer 8. Run offline installer:

    Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu

Success! with prompt to restart computer once again and showing new Metro app shortcut on my taskbar.

    Big shame to Microsoft!

This worked for me also Marek. After several efforts downloading the update which would only ever get to 22% before trying and failing to install, it seemed clear that Windows had a partial copy of the package, from my first attempt to download, which needed removing. I ran the steps above without the /resetbase option in the dism command. It wasn't necessary for me to rename the c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution directory to achieve a good install.

Will maybe hold off a day or two before installing the next major update.

    Thanks
