Original Title: Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install

I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now.  I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day.  Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window.  The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s.  After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020.  From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.

Now I looked in the Windows update history to see if the other required updates like KB2919442,**** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 were installed and they aren't in the update history.  I thought they were installed already for KB2919355 to be installed.  Are all of these update files included in the KF2919355 update that pops up in the windows update?

Also, my update history can is only up to date in the control panel and doesn't show any updates installed in the modern PC settings app.  Did windows update fail to properly install updates required before trying to install later updates? What can and can't I install right now?

So far I've manually downloaded the links to  KB2919355, KB2919442, **** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 posted in this thread:

I haven't installed anything yet.

Any help on why nothing has worked or installed properly?

(Update (5/5/14):  A fix for KB2919355 has been released that will resolve some customers receiving Error 80073712 when installing this update.  This fix is now included as part of KB2919355 and will install the next time you attempt to install Windows Updates. Enter cmd in the search box, and then right-click or press and holdCommand Prompt. 3. Tap or click Run as administrator**.** 4. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type one of the following commands depending on your version of Windows, and then press Enter. Don't include a line break as shown here. - If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1, type:

    Hi Susan,

I've posted this earlier in another thread, but you seem to be focusing on the error 80073712 which is what I keep getting. And thank you very much for your efforts.

I tried downloading 8.1 update via Windows update on 8 April and kb2919355 failed to load citing corrupt or missing file ( 80073721). Went to Microsoft Download center and searched for kb2919355 which brought up several sub files. I was able to manually download and install all but the kb2932046 . Ran Windows update again and it said I still needed to install 2919355, but the file was only 25.4 mb. the size of 2932046.  I got the same 80073712 error. I knew that subfile 2919355 had to be installed before the feature packs and gambled on the order of the feature packs. My system shows in the control panel that 2919355 has been installed. ALL of the new features of the upgrade seem to be working properly without the kb2932046 file. Any idea on how to get it to install?  I've tried all of the DISM and other fixes to no avail. I am on an original Windows 7 32 bit intel  self build desktop computer, no touch screen, which has been upgraded to Windows 8 Pro with Media Center and then to Windows 8.1, all via download.

I'll reiterate that my system seems to be working correctly [and I like the new features] without the kb2932046 file. I'm guessing the 2046 features are for the touch screen and is why I'm not missing anything.

    Hope this helps your diagnostics.

What was your error message?  Are you sure KB2919355 was installed as I'm not seeing it pushed out yet, and are you sure you were not trying to install the x86 package on a x64bit machine or visa versa?

Error 80073712. Yes, I'm 100% it's the new update. The store icon is now on the taskbar. I also have the power and search buttons in the upper-right of the Start screen. Yes, I'm 100% sure I did not attempt to install the 32 bit version on my 64 bit machine. The name of the standalone package I downloaded is: Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu.

After a few calls with tech support and trying, pretty much, all of the troubleshooting steps I've seen on this board, I'd given up; my final failed attempt was around 11 am. About 4:15pm my computer, without warning, restarted and the update installed successfully.
