Original Title: Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install

I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now.  I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day.  Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window.  The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s.  After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020.  From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.

Now I looked in the Windows update history to see if the other required updates like KB2919442,**** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 were installed and they aren't in the update history.  I thought they were installed already for KB2919355 to be installed.  Are all of these update files included in the KF2919355 update that pops up in the windows update?

Also, my update history can is only up to date in the control panel and doesn't show any updates installed in the modern PC settings app.  Did windows update fail to properly install updates required before trying to install later updates? What can and can't I install right now?

So far I've manually downloaded the links to  KB2919355, KB2919442, **** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 posted in this thread:

I haven't installed anything yet.

Any help on why nothing has worked or installed properly?

(Update (5/5/14):  A fix for KB2919355 has been released that will resolve some customers receiving Error 80073712 when installing this update.  This fix is now included as part of KB2919355 and will install the next time you attempt to install Windows Updates. Didn't stand on one foot while rubbing my head, but close.  After weeks of trying almost every suggestion here, and dozens of failed attempts, got it installed yesterday. Three failures started the day, and on the fourth one I received the standard the update couldn't be installed, undoing changes, do not turn your computer off message.

But I shut the computer off anyway, while the message was still on the screen.  When it rebooted, Update 1 had installed, even though Windows Update said it hadn't.  Clicked check for updates, it did and indicated Update 1 needed to be installed.  Went ahead with that, the hard drive ran a couple minutes (while staying on the update screen) and said the install had succeeded.  Windows Update history shows just Update 1 and the two subsequent important ones that became available after 1 kicked in.

I do not recommend anyone try this, but am providing it as yet another example of the caprice of Windows 8.

Don't know about you, but I've had enough elevated commands to last a good long time.

Finally, after 6 hours work, resolved my Windows 8.1 update problem.  Thanks to someone in the Community who suggested turning off Anti Virus.  Can’t say that is the total answer but it appears to have worked on my machine.

    Configuration:

    Windows 8.1 PRO 64

    ESET Smart Security 7

    1. Turned Off ESET
    2. Ran the DISM for 64 remove-package 3 times.  First 2 times it advised the package KB2919355 was not properly formatted.  Worked the 3^rd^ time.

    dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1.14

    1. Windows Re-booted
    2. Turned Off ESET
    3. Ran:

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    1. Re-booted windows
    2. Turned Off ESET
    3. Ran (be patient):

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    1. Re-booted windows
    2. Checked for Windows Updates installed and discovered KB2959977 was now showing as installed.  This update is part of the package for KB2919355.  There are several updates in this package and KB2959977 was the only one that installed.
    3. Uninstalled update KB2959977
    4. Re-booted windows
    5. Turned Off ESET
    6. Installed KB2919355 successfully.  I am on Verizon FIOS with 50MB download speed and it took nearly 30 minutes to download.

This is the procedure that worked on my Windows 8.1 Machine.  No guarantee it will work on yours.
