Original Title: Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install

I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now.  I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day.  Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window.  The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s.  After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020.  From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.

Now I looked in the Windows update history to see if the other required updates like KB2919442,**** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 were installed and they aren't in the update history.  I thought they were installed already for KB2919355 to be installed.  Are all of these update files included in the KF2919355 update that pops up in the windows update?

Also, my update history can is only up to date in the control panel and doesn't show any updates installed in the modern PC settings app.  Did windows update fail to properly install updates required before trying to install later updates? What can and can't I install right now?

So far I've manually downloaded the links to  KB2919355, KB2919442, **** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 posted in this thread:

I haven't installed anything yet.

Any help on why nothing has worked or installed properly?

So the learning message from all this is that a) like any major international company, microsoft don't care, as long as it's nearly right for most people some of the time they are happy and that b) even those of that think we've achieved success , may not have - who knows what will happen with the next update? and c) turning off antivirus should not be needed - after all THEY want us to install updates automatically so we can't turn off anti virus.....or is this all about a little war between microsoft and some antivirus makers.....conspiracy theories here we go!

    Seems to be about right...

Finally, after 6 hours work, resolved my Windows 8.1 update problem.  Thanks to someone in the Community who suggested turning off Anti Virus.  Can’t say that is the total answer but it appears to have worked on my machine.

    Configuration:

    Windows 8.1 PRO 64

    ESET Smart Security 7

    1. Turned Off ESET
    2. Ran the DISM for 64 remove-package 3 times.  First 2 times it advised the package KB2919355 was not properly formatted.  Worked the 3^rd^ time.

    dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1.14

    1. Windows Re-booted
    2. Turned Off ESET
    3. Ran:

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    1. Re-booted windows
    2. Turned Off ESET
    3. Ran (be patient):

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    1. Re-booted windows
    2. Checked for Windows Updates installed and discovered KB2959977 was now showing as installed.  This update is part of the package for KB2919355.  There are several updates in this package and KB2959977 was the only one that installed.
    3. Uninstalled update KB2959977
    4. Re-booted windows
    5. Turned Off ESET
    6. Installed KB2919355 successfully.  I am on Verizon FIOS with 50MB download speed and it took nearly 30 minutes to download.

This is the procedure that worked on my Windows 8.1 Machine.  No guarantee it will work on yours.

Have Windows Defender...turned if off before stand-alone update...didn't work...furthermore now Defender won't work properly and I will probably have to re-install it.

You do realize I don't work for Microsoft and I'm just a volunteer here.

The reason I am taking my free time to set up cases is to ensure that these issues do get looked at.

i am not gleeful at all this is happening.  I'm upset that consumers still are facing this deadline, there has been little official communication and no extension of time for consumers.
