Windows 8.1 "working on features 100% complete don't turn off your computer"

Windows 8.1 asked update, I watched it go from 0% to 100%.  And now it's been stuck on the black screen with the above phrase while a circle keeps revolving.   This has been happening for the past 8 hours and there has been nothing I can do.  My laptop/tablet is the ASUS Transformer T100T and I've had it for one week.   Cannot access anything.   Right now, I'm waiting for the battery to die because I have no other choice.  And I cannot reboot by holding down the power button.  Please help.  I have a job interview tomorrow and would like to print out my resume.

Hi TeeDee,

Before we start with the troubleshooting steps, I would like to know some information about this issue.

  1. Have you connected any external devices other than mouse and keyboard?
  2. Are you using any third party security software on your computer?

If you have connected any external devices other than mouse and keyboard, then try disconnecting it and check.

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it works for you.

Method 1:

If you have an Installation Media, then Perform Hard Shut down and then try performing Automatic repair and check if it helps.

Follow the steps to perform automatic repair from Windows Recovery Environment:

Insert the Installation Media such as (USB or DVD) and restart your computer.

  1. Press F12 key (typically this is F12, but it can differ between computer manufacturers)and choose the drive that you inserted the installation media into.
  2. Once the Windows Setup window appears, follow these steps:
  3. Click Next and select Repair your computer.
  4. You will then see a blue screen and an option to choose. Choose the option Troubleshoot and select Advanced options.
  5. You may choose Automatic Repair from Advanced boot option.

Method 2:

Perform System Restore using the Installation Media and check if the issue persists.

Follow the steps to perform system restore:

  1. Insert the Installation Media such as (DVD or flash drive) and press F12 key and click on change default or other optionswhich is at the bottom of the screen.
  2. In the next screen click on troubleshoot option, this will display you different WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) options to resolve issues with the computer when it is in no boot state.
  3. Now Click on System Restore, this will open up a Wizard and restore to a point when the computer was working fine.

If you do not have an Installation Media, then refer to the following Microsoft Help article to create an Installation Media.

    Same here, on an Asus Essentio M51AD, a few weeks old. Almost all of us have Asus machines, that's quite a coincidence... Tried the power off/power on approach several times, no luck. Automatic Repair failed and System Image Recovery didn't show available restore points, when later, having Windows running again, I saw that there actually was one available - just a day old. This is a mess. Also, stopping to provide us with recovery discs really is a bad move.

    The good news is: Unpluging all USB devices seemed to do the trick. Good luck!

    Hi guys, I had the same problem with my new MSI ge 60...after couple of hours I tried to remove my USB mouse and after 2 min the logon screen showed...don't know exactly if its connected but thought I would share.

    I have an MSI CX61 and I just had the same issue found this forum and I removed my usb wireless mouse receiver from the USB port 30 seconds later I was able to log on. Very weird.

    Thanks for the post! I had a usb mouse reciever plugged in and as soon as I unplugged it it pulled out of the loop and seems fine. I had tried hard restarting twice before seeing your post but it would just go back to the loop. Not sure if those restarts helped at all or if it was just the mouse.

    I have the same problem. I have a HP Pavillion 2 in 1 which I bought over a year ago. It came with Windows 8 pre-installed.

    At that time it kept prompting me to update to 8.1. I did so and it was so slow and caused problems with some of the software. I changed back to 8 and it was OK.

    unfortunately, it has updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 again. Hours and hours wasted.  Had to pay a tech guy to reload 8.1.

    A week later 'Working on Features 100% complete don't turn off your computer' has come up for hours on end. reboots don't cure it.

    I am at my wits end. My old Eee netbook which I am using now has Windows 7 and I also have a very old XP computer, both of which work fine!!!

    Why oh why have Microsoft go t themselves into such a mess and why do the hardware firms such as HP put up with it??

    My daughter has always used Apple computers with no problem. Now apart from the price, why don't I buy Apple in the future? Or use a Chromebook.

    Can Microsoft comment?
