Windows 8.1 "working on features 100% complete don't turn off your computer"

Windows 8.1 asked update, I watched it go from 0% to 100%.  And now it's been stuck on the black screen with the above phrase while a circle keeps revolving.   This has been happening for the past 8 hours and there has been nothing I can do.  My laptop/tablet is the ASUS Transformer T100T and I've had it for one week.   Cannot access anything.   Right now, I'm waiting for the battery to die because I have no other choice.  And I cannot reboot by holding down the power button.  Please help.  I have a job interview tomorrow and would like to print out my resume.

Hi TeeDee,

Before we start with the troubleshooting steps, I would like to know some information about this issue.

  1. Have you connected any external devices other than mouse and keyboard?
  2. Are you using any third party security software on your computer?

If you have connected any external devices other than mouse and keyboard, then try disconnecting it and check.

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it works for you.

Method 1:

If you have an Installation Media, then Perform Hard Shut down and then try performing Automatic repair and check if it helps.

Follow the steps to perform automatic repair from Windows Recovery Environment:

Insert the Installation Media such as (USB or DVD) and restart your computer.

  1. Press F12 key (typically this is F12, but it can differ between computer manufacturers)and choose the drive that you inserted the installation media into.
  2. Once the Windows Setup window appears, follow these steps:
  3. Click Next and select Repair your computer.
  4. You will then see a blue screen and an option to choose. Choose the option Troubleshoot and select Advanced options.
  5. You may choose Automatic Repair from Advanced boot option.

Method 2:

Perform System Restore using the Installation Media and check if the issue persists.

Follow the steps to perform system restore:

  1. Insert the Installation Media such as (DVD or flash drive) and press F12 key and click on change default or other optionswhich is at the bottom of the screen.
  2. In the next screen click on troubleshoot option, this will display you different WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) options to resolve issues with the computer when it is in no boot state.
  3. Now Click on System Restore, this will open up a Wizard and restore to a point when the computer was working fine.

If you do not have an Installation Media, then refer to the following Microsoft Help article to create an Installation Media.

    I had this problem with my Asus Transformer tablet, I got it a week ago. I was still setting things up and after an automatic software update, It was stuck in the blue screen "working on features 100% complete" for most of the day. I couldn't access any features, or system settings.   Turning it on and off repeatedly didn't seem to do anything, various key combinations didn't seem to anything.  Maybe turning it on and off throughout the day finally broke the loop or maybe it ended on it's own.  Either way it was quite frustrating, and it sounds like no one else has a clear solution for this.

    I did the dame thing. I removed my USB mouse connector and within a minute the login screen showed.

    This happened to me on my Asus Zenbook - 6 days new.  I downloaded Adobe Flash Player.  Ran AVG scanner to make sure things were good to go, and AVG froze.  Couldn't even kill the process.  When I tried to reboot, it went into the "Working on Features 100% complete.  Don't turn off your computer" endless loop.  Looking on multiple posting, this is what fixed the problem - don't laugh at the first 3 steps - it really does work (found it on a MS forum)

    1.  Hold down your on/off button for a while ~30-60 secs to power down completely.
    2. Push the on/off button to turn the computer back on.  The "Working..." message will appear again.
    3.  Repeat Step 1 and 2 for 5+ times, or until you get past the "Working..." message.  It took me 4 times for the loop to break.

    On a MS forum posting, a MS tech said that each time you power back on, it attempts to fix things, but can't do it all the way.  That's why you power back off and power back on.  Each time it fixes more and makes a little more progress until it finally fixes what caused the loop in the first place.

    1. At this point, I got a blue screen that looks like the following:

    Select the "Troubleshoot" option.

    1. This gave me the following screen:

    I selected the "Automatic Repair" and it ran, but told me that the errors were not fixed.  Since every situation is different, this repair may work for you and that's all you have to do.

    Since this didn't work for me, I went through the steps again and when I got to the screen above, the next time I choose "System Restore".  What Windows 8 does is it keeps images/settings of the last time your system successfully booted with no errors.  It calls these restore points.  Selecting this option will give you a list of restore points to choose from.  I picked the last restore point and told it to restore.

    Once the restore was complete, I was prompted to restart the computer.  I told it to restart.  My computer boot back up just fine.    Yippee - thank God for internet postings and YouTube videos!

    P.S. : This incident has taught me the importance of creating Restore Points and Recovery Drives :-).

    Hello guys,

    Today my computer too was stuck in "Working on features 100% ...." loop.

    Somehow I managed to exit.

    I can't replicate anymore, i have even restart my computer couple of times and now is working OK.

    What I remember was playing with the combination of "Alt" and the F keys. I think, I pressed Alt+F1, nothing happen, and after Alt + F2 the log-in screen show up. Now is working!!!

    Hope this is helpful, and for other one will be solution to exit from the loop.
