I am not sure if everyone is checking at the right place if they are connected to domain network and they have 8.1 because only 8.1 has this option. Windows 8 has a different way to share devices and content.

For chromecast troubleshooting:

https://support.google.com/chromecast/troubleshooter/2995236?hl=en&ref\_topic=3447927#ts=3081637,3249450

Where to find the option to share:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/turn-sharing-on-or-off

I have been using Windows since forever and have used Apple too, so switching to Mac / Apple is not going to help. Its just another OS with the same fundamentals. Go figure it out in a Apple store if you want a demo.

NO, it's not "the chromecast thing", it's the Missing the network settings thing.

NO DOMAIN NETWORK, no domain controllers, no windows servers, just personal computers AT HOME.

I don't have a chromecast, I want to access my personal Surface PRO with Windows 8.1 files from my personal notebook with Windows 7, but I can't because the screen that allows me to change the sharing on my HOME network on the Surface PRO is missing, it's just not there.

And note that all worked fine before, with Windows 8, all the mess started after the upgrade to 8.1.

Oh, its the chromecast thing. Apparently, I have a win 8 and 8.1 laptop and I can connect to chormecast via win 8, but not via 8.1. Can you check a couple of things if you haven't already ?

    1. Network and sharing center->Enable network discovery for your network
    2. Add Chromecast/Chrome to firewall (inbound and outbound)
    3. Disable antivirus (this solved the issue for me on my win 8 laptop)
    4. Reboot the router. This was also another issue I faced while I was trying to set up chromecast.

If nothing works, try contacting Google via 24 hour helpline. Keep me posted, may be we can solve this issue by method of elimination.

EMontanhole stated that he was using his personal Surface Pro. The OP, RichardRathe, stated that he was not using a work laptop.

According to Microsoft's website, you must have Windows 8.1 Pro to connect to a domain. I have plain vanilla Windows 8.1 running on my personal laptop. Please see my earlier posting for the rest of my variables. I do not have the "Find devices and content" setting, though I have scoured the internet and tried nearly every suggestion I found.

I hope someone can help! I, too, am unable to use my new Chromecast, though I had no problems installing and running it on my husband's Windows 7 laptop.

EMontanhole, do you know if your laptop is a work laptop ? Sometimes, system administrators remove some options by disabling or removing certain registry keys. If you have a personal computer, do give it a shot. This is exactly what happened with me.
