Frequent system-crashes in Windows 8.1

My Sony Vaio Tap 11 (model: SVT1121C5E) runs very unstable ever since I bought it about 3 months ago. Almost every day the system crashes, sometimes multiple times. Sometimes with prior bluescreen, Windows colleting data and then stopping at 100%.

Occasionally the device shuts down and automatically restarts.

Sometimes the screen becomes black and the device can be turned off only by holding the power-button for a few seconds.

I´m running Windows 8.1 and all the current device-drivers, bios-update and Windows-updates are installed. I would really need some help here.

The event-viewer has some "Event41, Kernel-Power" entries in the category "critical" such as following: <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> - <System> <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power" Guid="{331C3B3A-2005-44C2-AC5E-77220C37D6B4}" /> <EventID>41</EventID> <Version>3</Version> <Level>1</Level> <Task>63</Task> <Opcode>0</Opcode> <Keywords>0x8000000000000002</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2014-03-06T10:01:05.426979800Z" /> <EventRecordID>58462</EventRecordID> <Correlation /> <Execution ProcessID="4" ThreadID="8" /> <Channel>System</Channel> <Computer>Parinibbana</Computer> <Security UserID="S-1-5-18" /> </System> - <EventData> <Data Name="BugcheckCode">126</Data> <Data Name="BugcheckParameter1">0xffffffffc0000005</Data> <Data Name="BugcheckParameter2">0xfffff80077ebbb76</Data> <Data Name="BugcheckParameter3">0xffffd00026b5b638</Data> <Data Name="BugcheckParameter4">0xffffd00026b5ae40</Data> <Data Name="SleepInProgress">0</Data> <Data Name="PowerButtonTimestamp">0</Data> <Data Name="BootAppStatus">0</Data> </EventData> </Event>

Another frequently occurring error is "LoadPerf" with EventID: 3012 The general-tab says: "The performance strings in the Performance registry value is corrupted when process Performance extension counter provider. The BaseIndex value from the Performance registry is the first DWORD in the Data section, LastCounter value is the second DWORD in the Data section, and LastHelp value is the third DWORD in the Data section."

In the details of the XML-view it says: <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> - <System> <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power" Guid="{331C3B3A-2005-44C2-AC5E-77220C37D6B4}" /> <EventID>41</EventID> <Version>3</Version> <Level>1</Level> <Task>63</Task> <Opcode>0</Opcode> <Keywords>0x8000000000000002</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2014-03-06T10:01:05.426979800Z" /> <EventRecordID>58462</EventRecordID> <Correlation /> <Execution ProcessID="4" ThreadID="8" /> <Channel>System</Channel> <Computer>Parinibbana</Computer> <Security UserID="S-1-5-18" /> </System> - <EventData> <Data Name="BugcheckCode">126</Data> <Data Name="BugcheckParameter1">0xffffffffc0000005</Data> <Data Name="BugcheckParameter2">0xfffff80077ebbb76</Data> <Data Name="BugcheckParameter3">0xffffd00026b5b638</Data> <Data Name="BugcheckParameter4">0xffffd00026b5ae40</Data> <Data Name="SleepInProgress">0</Data> <Data Name="PowerButtonTimestamp">0</Data> <Data Name="BootAppStatus">0</Data> </EventData> </Event>

In order to get a clearer picture of my system-crashes I downloaded a software called "WhoCrashed", clicked on "Analyse" and the following is the result of it´s log:

Conclusion

32 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. Only 10 are included in this report. 2 third party drivers have been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers: netwbw02.sys (Intel® Wireless WiFi Link Driver, Intel Corporation) nuserver64.sys (Network USB Server 64bit Device Driver, Elite Silicon Technology Inc.) If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination the errors that have been reported for these drivers and include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions from users who have been experiencing similar problems. End of WhoCrashed´s Analysis.

For more information I have put the Windows event-viewer

a) application events

b) system events

c) Windows Power Shell logs,

as well as the dumpfile-list on my dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/l840x044kepyrna/aSIqO7PmqC

Please feel free to have a look at them too.

For comments and suggestions I would be very grateful.

Thanks

What I meant was the official Sony-customer-repair-center of Malaysia, which is also responsible for warranty-claims. Even though I might not be able to get it repaired under warranty since I didn´t buy it here, they should still be able to repair it and have access to spare parts.

I´ll keep you updated as to the progress.

    Thanks so far.

Great, clean install as I said with nothing but latest drivers via Sony website + Important Windows Updates is best option. If you crash after that, contacting Sony is your next move. Regarding your previous mentioned of a place that has Sony hardware, I'd be careful. It's always best to go to the manufacturer first.

    Regards,

    Patrick

Thank you very much Patrick, for taking your time to explain things clearly.

Since I will make a system-image anyways before I send the laptop in to Sony, I can as well make a clean installation of Windows first. If the problem still exists, it´s pretty clear that it´s a hardware problem.

If not, I could re-install the image, but that probably wouldn´t make much sense, since I would very likely get the same error again.

Maybe better to install the software one after another until it crashes again (or not).

I cannot provide assistance via remote access, my apologies.

    1. I don't really understand your question, but I will explain what I think you may be asking as best I can.

For starters, the original crash dump you had showed me was of the 0x9F bug check, which again, implies that a driver is in an inconsistent and/or invalid power state. According to analysis, that driver appeared to be the Logitech SetPoint Unifying KMDF USB Filter driver.

Now, even if there is a hardware fault present on a system, the system will still crash, and at times, cause bug checks such as 0x9F, even if it's not a software problem. The Logitech driver may have just been faulted because Windows thought that's what was causing kernel corruption at the time of the crash. However, when we see things like that, we must of course always pay attention and address them.

    2. After removing your USB hub, updating drivers, etc, you got a black screen, and no dumping process. This is very indicative of hardware failure (black screen, no dump, etc). If I had to say, it's an internal video failure, RAM, or overall motherboard failure.

The only way to figure things out like that is for the manufacturer to run diagnostics, as if you attempt to open the system/device yourself, warranty is void.

    -------------------

Overall, to be absolutely sure this is a hardware fault, I think it'd be best to run a clean install of Windows with nothing but the latest drivers via Sony's website, and IMPORTANT (not Optional) Windows updates. Do NOT connect the hub + devices. Keep everything basic.

If you still crash after that, you have yourself a hardware problem.

    Regards,

    Patrick

    That´s interesting, Patrick.

    1. Would a bad driver that causes a certain hardware to crash be called a software- or a hardware issue according to your classification from above?
    2. Is there a way to find out which hardware gives me the crashes?

If not, how then would the guys in the Sony-center find out? Since much of the hardware is sodered onto the motherboard in these slim tablets, one can´t simply try out replacing one thing after the other until everything works fine.

Furthermore it takes quite a bit of time until the device crashes. I´m afraid they would just change something, let it run for a day or two and come to the conclusion that it´s OK now and they send it back to me. A few days later the same crash appears again. I do have some experience with repair-services and I don´t want to go down that road unless absolutely necessary.

If we could find out what part it is that gives the crashes, analyzing various protocols and logs, I would just go to the local Sony store here in Malaysia and pay for the replacement of that component. Money is not much of an issue - but time is.

Would you prefer to run a remote-desktop or TeamViewer-session to check things out directly on my device, or is the material I can provide via uploads sufficient for further analysis? Please feel free to let me know whatever you need.
