I totally agree with you and really would like to pin the live tiles to my desk top as well as long as they would stay in sync with the start screen!  But again the question was??  How to disable top bar for closing apps in windows 8.1 update 1?

If you have a solution for the original question it would be nice!! BTW I bought my hp machine and tweaked it a bit a week before windows 8 was released with plan to update to 8, it had Windows 7 with the 14$ buck 8 update offer. The point is it had this program called hp magic canvas that would have been perfect for the new Modern interface! The program had a transparent Carousel at the bottom of the desktop used for icons perhaps live tiles! and a desk top screen that will expand, looked never ending so you could work on many items at once, very cool and I think they had a copyright problem or something. And no this software is not compatible for 8, I think is to do/or about trade rights or something! Oh well what you going to do? So SAD!!! I may just roll my system back to windows 7 and use that it was way cool!

    Scott,

I'm not being obnoxious. Please, explain why it needs to be disabled.  It disappears w/in a moment after initially opening an APP.  What is the problem or issue it creates if not disabled?  Just curious...

    Cheers,

    Drew

Well I have been forced to use chrome modern,

My problem is that I can not get Explorer11 Modern to work consistently! At times will crash, or requires you to go to desktop mode to function, not save even the current page in the cache! Not work well with Flash player although I have added tons of sites to trusted sites to appease!   To keep from going crazy with frustration I have been forced to go back to Chrome Modern and set it as default!! It works almost flawlessly I am sorry to say but why can I not make Explorer11 work as well?  So In chrome and store apps I use all the time such as Homeasy, mint, facebook and so on the app bar gets in the way often pluse I have no need for it!

    Scott,

It is a bit hard for me to say very much on this occasion because I do not use Chrome.  Tried it, didn't care for it & not being a big fan of google...

I presume when you say Explorer 11 Modern that means the IE APP; and I guess there must be a similar APP for Chrome.  Again, I'm @ a disadvantage since, I use the web browsers (on Desktop) not, APPs for 'surfing'.

So all I know is that if & when I open an APP, upon sitting w/ the cursor in or on that APP for a moment, the Exit Bar disappears, ergo, it does not remain "in the way".  However, someone using Chrome mentioned that one can Rt Clk on the Exit Bar and that makes it disappear.

For myself, I primarily use IE11 web browser on Desktop & have no problems or issues w/ anything.

I tried the IE APP in the early days of Win8 but, wasn't attracted to it enough to get comfy w/ it.

Sorry, if the above doesn't help you much.

    Cheers,

    Drew

Thanks Drew! I do like the new Modern interface a lot and would rather use IE11 Modern but I have way too many problems with it and when is is not crashing forces you to switch to the desktop view for some functions why! Where as chrome works great in Modern view all the time and I do like Google myself but it sure runs great on Windows 8.1 so! I would just as soon not ever use the desktop interface again Back to the problem we started with the app bar gets in the way and blocks controls in apps at time and I would like to be able to disable it! That is what I am hoping to find an answer to.
