How to disable top bar for closing apps in windows 8.1 update 1?

Your right the Start screen & Tiles are completely optional, Myself I love the live titles and have no need for the desktop although I use the taskbar and it's toolbars "couple" of them all the time and like my apps full or split screen! I think they are trying for each to their own "personalized" . At first I was a Windows 8 hater and stubborn but now love it and 8.1 even more go figure! 

See what I mean?  Some love it & use it.  Some don't hate it but, don't , really, use it.  But, either way, not something to argue about or protest about either.  Take it or leave it, no need to fuss just make a happy choice.

One can begin w/ love or hate or just learn, discover, use the OS w/ neutrality and an open mind be you an old fellow like me or a young kid or anyone in between.

For myself, I liked it in the beginning & that fondness only increased of time & as I grew to know it even more & better.

And, see? lots of people, really, do like & appreciate what Windows 8.1 is, offers and can do & how well it does things.

Got in the habit of using alt+F4 to close apps, I find easy and way faster! So no need to drag app or use mouse, Problem solved and yes I think auto-Hide title bar is the way to go! If the over 55 club and yes I do belong can not figure it out oh well to bad!!

Agree w/ you.  Have tried to express the same points myself several times.  As an IT Pro trying to help people it does grow frustrating.  Yes, much of people's struggle (if any) w/ Windows 8 has been 'attitude'.  If you are swayed by hearsay & negative comments, that may not be all that credible in the 1st place or for whatever reason go into something w/ a chip on your shoulder, becoming comfortable w/ it is probably going to be tough.

I used & manipulated APPs just fine before the wee bar was added.  But, people were whinging so MS tried to give them things to please & appease them... then, they whinge about those things.  I, too, a while back in this same thread (before I grew weary of this thread) said, you can't please everyone all the time.  But, it is frustrating when they whinge about something & then whinge about what they are given, due to that whinging, to make them happy (or so you think & expect).

Not to mention, the silly thing is, you could always Rt Clk to close an APP, was easy.  Now, (again on the silly part) let's say APPs are showing on or (even) pinned to the Taskbar and one is opened, just 'bang' (click) the mouse @ the Top-left corner & wham you are back to looking @ the Desktop... well, assuming you were there initially.  They gave me the top bar, I used it a couple times, found it to be more trouble or fuss than it was worth and went back to just 'banging' the corner or Rt Clk, anyway.  But, it sure was no bother to me whether the top bar was there or not.

Still, @ least MS listen & tried to respond... sadly, just to open themselves out to a new & different set of complaints.

It is, always, interesting to me that outside of Forums, people I speak w/ praise 8 and are enjoying it. 

Also, interesting that I can tell my clients & customers or others using 8 or new to it a couple of things, tips & instructions, and w/in a few minutes, they understand it & have no trouble using it and like it.  Go figure, eh?  Plus, they, really, appreciate & use what they have been shown & or given.

I have tried to tell people in Forums the same & many have thanked me.  Others, well, we aren't sure what happens.

It's hard to get deep into conversations about Start screens & Tiles and navigating 8.  One does not NEED to use the Start sceen & Tiles... completely optional!  Albeit, many people think this approach is really cool.  BUT, one can (and I & others, inded, do) never leave Desktop.  Pin stuff, use the Desktop Toolbar & have an Applications folder on the Taskbar & life is good.  The folder is the same content as the ALL Applications screen, btw.  Bout all I use Start for is searching... the just start typing anywhere thing is neat, quick & handy.

No biggie, just thought I'd let you know someone empathises w/ you.

PS: I don't dislike the Start screen, btw, don't want to give the wrong impression.  Just have no need to bother w/ it or getting caught up fussing w/ it.  I am looking forward to APPs not opening full screen & covering up the Desktop... until things are made to share the screen space (real estate).

I totally agree with a lot of you and I often find the app tittle bar getting in the way- especially when trying to search in the store. However, one comment above does bring up a very good point. Unlike the rest of you, or so according to news, I never hated Windows 8 to begin with. 8.1 just make the experience better (in my opinion anyway) and now, due to several mouse users not learning the new OS- they asked for something and now that they got it, most of them want it gone? You know, that just shows one point. Before the users go doubting an operation system, maybe they should learn it first. Why do I say that? Because now that everyone has learned how to close the apps, they realize that the Windows 8 way of doing it was actually quite easy. So they want heir features gone- features that they asked for? Really. I would have a suggestion for Microsoft on the other hand. It would be nice if this tittle bar was optional (only for metro apps) and if a user wanted to, they should be able to do something like right click the bar and then click a settings option. Then under settings of this tittle bar, they could maybe check the "Disable" box? Just a suggestion but yes pleasing everyone is a very hard thing to do.
