WiFi Connection Issues: 5Ghz band not found? How do I determine wifi settings & limitations

Bought a new laptop and have been setting it up with a wifi dual band router.  My issue is that Band A at 2.5Ghz connects anywhere in the house, but the 5Ghz band cannot even be found.  Working the problem with my router settings and support.

Laptop: HP Pavillion TS 15 Notebook 15-n088ca with Windows 8.1 (fully updated) & WiFi

Router: D-Link Wireless AC1000 Dual Band Router DIR-820L with 2.5GHz and 5GHz bands.

The 2.5ghz band is discoverable and connects fine, and works anywhere in the house. The 5GHz Band is not even discovered, doesn't show up on the list. [A new Galaxy Tablet did find the 5GHz Band but was very weak].

How do I find out if there are limitations on my Notebook pc regarding 5GHz bands? Can they be updated? Are there other solutions?

I have been on the Router support site, and one of the issues mentioned was a limitation on the pc to recieve 5GHz. (Which I wish I knew before I bought the router at the same time as the pc)

Any help would be appreciated, Thank You.

Hi Richard,

I have searched for information about the wireless adapter installed in your computer and found that your wireless adapter has 802.11n standard, which supports 5GHz bandwidth.

unfortunately, I was unable to find the Wireless adapter make and model. Let us know the make and model of the Wireless adapter.

While you reply, check if these settings help.

  1. Go to Desktop mode
  2. Select Charms > Settings > PC Info
  3. Click Device Manager (located in the top left of screen)
  4. Click the > sign to expand the Network adapters entry.
  5. Right-click the wireless adapter and click Properties.
  6. Click the Advanced tab, click 802.11n mode, under value Select Enable.

Hope the information provided is helpful. Do reply, if you need further help.

    Ashok,

Thank you for taking the time to reply!  Somehow this issue has been solved.  I should have removed this post from the board or mentioned that it is solved.  I am not sure how it got solved, but anyway, it is working fine now.  Apologies!

    Jim

I have a Dell Latitude E6430 and it has Dell 1504 802.11 b/g/n(2.4GHz) network adapter. So if I understand everyone's answers here, because it has 802.11n, it should work with the 5 GHz network, but so far I have not been able to get it to do so.

I have a Linksys e2500 router and with that router, I can access the 5GHz network. It showed up immediately, but not the Netgear router 5GHz.

So there must be something I am doing wrong or need to do in order to get that working.

    Any ideas?

    Jim

    Hi Wilson,

It seems like the card you have now is 802.11b only and this allows the card to operate at 2.4GHz. As you have already upgraded drivers and still it shows 802.11b.

You may contact DELL support and check if this card supports 802.11n. Also check if there is any updated driver that enables 802.11n on this card.

I ran into the same problem that Wilson had, but am using a LinksysN900 dual band smart Wi-Fi router.

I worked with Linksys for about an hour tonight and we added a 5Ghz to my network, and gave it a slightly different name than the 2.4GHz one, but my Windows 8.1 laptop only shows the availability of the original wi-fi (or 2.4GHz one)..the 5GHz one still does not show up when I do discovery.

When I try to sign into the original 2.4GHz one (only one that shows up), it gives me the 'limited' connectivity.  After running diagnostics it tells me that 'wi-fi' doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

Can you help? My laptop is an HP Pavilion 17 TS Notebook PC.

    Thank you very much!
