WiFi Connection Issues: 5Ghz band not found? How do I determine wifi settings & limitations

Bought a new laptop and have been setting it up with a wifi dual band router.  My issue is that Band A at 2.5Ghz connects anywhere in the house, but the 5Ghz band cannot even be found.  Working the problem with my router settings and support.

Laptop: HP Pavillion TS 15 Notebook 15-n088ca with Windows 8.1 (fully updated) & WiFi

Router: D-Link Wireless AC1000 Dual Band Router DIR-820L with 2.5GHz and 5GHz bands.

The 2.5ghz band is discoverable and connects fine, and works anywhere in the house. The 5GHz Band is not even discovered, doesn't show up on the list. [A new Galaxy Tablet did find the 5GHz Band but was very weak].

How do I find out if there are limitations on my Notebook pc regarding 5GHz bands? Can they be updated? Are there other solutions?

I have been on the Router support site, and one of the issues mentioned was a limitation on the pc to recieve 5GHz. (Which I wish I knew before I bought the router at the same time as the pc)

Any help would be appreciated, Thank You.

Hi Richard,

I have searched for information about the wireless adapter installed in your computer and found that your wireless adapter has 802.11n standard, which supports 5GHz bandwidth.

unfortunately, I was unable to find the Wireless adapter make and model. Let us know the make and model of the Wireless adapter.

While you reply, check if these settings help.

  1. Go to Desktop mode
  2. Select Charms > Settings > PC Info
  3. Click Device Manager (located in the top left of screen)
  4. Click the > sign to expand the Network adapters entry.
  5. Right-click the wireless adapter and click Properties.
  6. Click the Advanced tab, click 802.11n mode, under value Select Enable.

    I have laptop with 2,4 GHz wireless built in and I was using an external USB 5 GHz wireless adapter from Wavelink. The adapter and software worked great prior to a Windows 10 update.  After the update it has never worked even with reinstalling the drivers.

    There are numerous posts on the internet regarding this issue.  Microsoft insists it is a driver issue but I don't see how that is possible when I have the most current drivers on my system, as do others, and suddenly Windows 10 doesn't accept that 5.0 ghz Wifi exists.  I have reinstalled drivers numerous times, blown away a computer and reinstalled Windows 10 completely (which worked with 5.0 just fine until it updated!) and still no joy.  If I rolled back (when I could) it fixed the problem -- imagine that!.  However, it continued to update my machine regardless of my decision so I have no choice but to stick to 2.4. 

    I have this issue with several devices, but of course it is always my hardware at fault.  I am getting ready to set up dual boot on one and add Ubuntu to it.  I bet it will see 5.0 with Ubuntu!  Will have to get on here and let you all know!

    What's different for me, mine is a New Computer bought in Nov 2017

    and had two (2) choices for connectivity 2.4 or 5G, I was on 5G for months

    than without my knowing it Disappeared,

    I've had provider come, they show 5G & I get it on my iPhone but not on

    my computers, this all happened after a Windows download, its the only

    explanation I can think of .. as I had 5G and now it doesn't exist ,,

    I'm using Win10

    Can I interface home security camera wireless system. Can I turn my Samsung note 8 5Ghz compatible, my router is the most up to date and have it set 2.4Ghz to 5Ghz. Also can I make it PC compatible? I already have a Microsoft account I don't know if I just created a new one or not. Thank you very much!!
