What exactly does KB2952664 do?

KB2952664 was published on April 22, 2014 and appears in my Windows Update List (I am running Windows 7 Pro - 64 bit).

The description of this update is vague:  "This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows."

Anyone have more information on what this update actually does? If its sole purpose is to ease the "upgrade" from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (or 8.1 or 8.1 update), then I'll just permanently hide KB2952664 (I have no desire or intention to "upgrade" my Windows 7 system to any flavor of Windows 8).

If its purpose is to ease what would be a true Windows 7 upgrade to a yet-to-be-announced Windows 7 SP2, then I'll keep it (but still would like to have more information about what KB2952664 actually does before installing).

    Sorry you got taken in by Microsoft's obtuse naming conventions.

    As far as PREVIEW updates, these are just pre-releases of the coming month's ROLLUPs. There is no corresponding preview for the coming month's SECURITY ONLY updates.

    This is just another example of Microsoft using their customers as un-paid beta testers rather than using some of the $20+ Billion they receive in quarterly revenue to invest in proper testing of code before release .... it's cheaper and easier to let their customers do the testing.

    I understand that you needed the outlook fix that (at this point in time) could only be obtained by installing the PREVIEW releases .... but now be very careful because you could have picked up other bugs from the PREVIEW release you just installed (be sure to keep all critical data/files backed up). Watch sites like Woody Leonards to keep aware of any reported bugs found in the PREVIEW release.

    One more tidbit.  I tried to rename ConpatTelRunner.exe, and the response (in an Administrator cmd window) is "Access is denied".  So, MS has made this executable "permanent", if it is installed.

    More Breakng News - With yesterday's paches, KB2952664 was re-released.  It installs a new \Windows\System32\CompatTelRunner.,exe file.  #31 in my install log.

    More Breakng News (sounds like a broken record) - I just noticed that, KB2952664 was re-released.   #32 in my install log.  I have not installed it yet.  I do nbt know if it will require a reboot, as some of the previous ones have and some have not.  I do not know if it will install a new CompatTelRunner..exe (my current one is dated  10/17/2017).

    Try to boot with F8 and choose command line environment. You might be able to rename/delete whatever you wish.
