What exactly does KB2952664 do?

KB2952664 was published on April 22, 2014 and appears in my Windows Update List (I am running Windows 7 Pro - 64 bit).

The description of this update is vague:  "This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows."

Anyone have more information on what this update actually does? If its sole purpose is to ease the "upgrade" from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (or 8.1 or 8.1 update), then I'll just permanently hide KB2952664 (I have no desire or intention to "upgrade" my Windows 7 system to any flavor of Windows 8).

If its purpose is to ease what would be a true Windows 7 upgrade to a yet-to-be-announced Windows 7 SP2, then I'll keep it (but still would like to have more information about what KB2952664 actually does before installing).

    When you quoted from the description of KB2952664, you forgot to include this part:

    "This update will help Microsoft and its partners ensure compatibility for customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system."

    Since I do not want to install Windows 10, and for privacy reasons, I do not want to participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program (which sends data from my PC to Microsoft) .... I continue to hide KB2952664 each time Microsoft unhides and re-issues it.

    Are you participating in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program?

    I was seeking to establish whether KB2952664was being downloaded because the user was in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program?

    Yes .... but said user (or any user considering participation in the Customer Experience Improvement Program) should also be made aware that installing KB2952664 could lead to nags about installing Windows 10.

    That statement is not necessarily true as I have pointed out countless times in the past. I do not believe that I should be misleading other users.

    This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. These diagnostics help determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed. This update will help Microsoft and its partners ensure compatibility for customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system.

    That it is specifically designed to assess compatibility issues related to installing the latest Windows operating system (look at that - even Microsoft isn't calling it an "updgrade" anymore), rather than performing general diagnostics on or providing improvements to the CEIP, is relevant.

    1. I am not participating in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program and have disabled all tasks, services, and processes related to it, as well as anything else from Microsoft that is telemetry-related. I still get KB2952664 in available updates every time it is re-released, as does everyone else (whether or not it has been previously hidden). It seems, then, that what is not relevant to receiving this update is participation in the CEIP.
