What exactly does KB2952664 do?

KB2952664 affects different computer in differing ways*.*

That is not very comforting, given that any computers that would be installing it would be running the same operating system, as it only applies to Windows 7.

It is possible that you will not be offered the update again.

Or, it is possible that no matter how many times we hide it, it will show up again and again as an "important" update, on the presumption that each time, it will sneak itself past a percentage of users.

I would like to say that this type of behaviour is beneath a company of Microsoft's stature. I would like to, but I can't, because this is the sort of thing we've come to expect from Microsoft with increasing frequency in recent years.

The moment a company believes itself to be invincible is the moment it begins the process of proving itself wrong.

Does help a little, but does not answer question about what it does and why was given the important rating. I have removed it from installed updates and really don't care what it does as it has not effected my computer in any way without it. Still, would like to know just what it does and the important rating

Select Start, All Programs, Windows Update, Change Settings. Under Important Updates is a box showing the current setting. Click on the Arrow down to the right and change the selection to “Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them” and click on OK.

Restart your computer twice. Start, All Programs, Windows Update, Check for Updates. Check the boxes before the updates you want to install, click on Install and click again on Install in the next window and the process of installing starts. You should let the process proceed without interruption. Multi-tasking at the time updating is in progress is unwise. The progress window will tell you what is going on. You need to be patient.

I also have windows7 64 bit but after updating last night, it said my update of 2952664 failed so i want to remove it from my list of installed updates. Why was this given a important rating???

This "important" update did not work when Windows Update tried to install it automatically. Looking at the KB help article did not help at all.

It is extremely bad to do that about supposed "co,patibility" problems that are left completely undescribed. Which kind of co,patibility problems, and why it is so i,portant that WU needs to install it automatically. If there's a ompatibility problem these problems should be listed (with which kind of applications. Do we use it?

In fact the article was refering to discussions related to an upgrade from a OS version PRIOR to Windows 7; but my Windows 7 installation was not an upgrade.

If this is needed to ensure a correct upgrade to Windows 8, such update should be part of the upgrading process itself, and only when we have a licence for Windows 8 (this requires additional purchase for most users; and may systems will NEVER upgrde windows W8; but possibly to W10; or will be using a clean install only).

DO NOT assume things that will NEVER appear. Notably because this system update can fail and produce errors.

IT FAILED on my installation and I had no idea how to repair it, I had to restore my sytem and disable this update, this costed me a lot of work time.

It appears that it was absolutely not an important update or Microsoft just refuses to say why it is important. We can just look at the list of uddated files and versions. Nothing is said about the compatibility changes. And it CORRUPTED my system which had sever problems when rebooting (nd my system was forced to reboot automatically while I was working and I did not notice the alert about the imminent reboot that appeared in a window hidden behing ,y working winfows.

I've lost hours in a time where I was not ready to reboot to install it (and Windows rebooting abruptly caused my long editing sessions to be lost with its data in progress).

PLEASE MICROSOFT, NEVER classify an update as important and NEVER schedule it for automatic installation when it is absolutely not needed. If it is really needed you MUST say why and explain precisely which kind of problems it should resolve, and what to do for preparing ourself before installing it. Possible caveats and resolutions or workaround should also be listed.

This update should have been let optional and the title should have been more explicit (saying that it was only needed to update to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 but not for updating for a possible later version which is still not officially released and not supported the same way).

This update should have been only part of the upgrade preparation wizard that could have made a software inventory, listed possible incompatibilties or explained that an update was needed fora correct inventory of existing softwares needing it for correct migration to a new OS.

In Wnidows Udate it should have beenlisted only as "recommended" but NOT "important". Andin all cases the affected softwares or APIs should have been listed precisely.

I really HATE Microsoft when such negligence or abuse of power is made against its users or When Microsoft thinks that no user can understand more technical details. Even if you just include a very summay description, the KB article shold also contain a link to a more technical article even if it is not translated. Users will then seek help with specialists when they need it (and notably when this update fails during installatio nand then corrupts the system, making its boot unstable).
