Windows 8.1

Since installing windows 8.1 My screen shuts down in the middle of doing something and I have to start all over. Any answeres

    Same problem here.  Windows randomly shutting down, etc.  I know PCs very well.  I'm no novice.  Tested everything... It's a Windows 8.1 mess-up.  My power options are set to "Don't let Microsoft think they own my machine therefore do nothing and leave ME to decide what to do with MY PC...  But it definitely seems something to do with the Power settings being messed-up...  Mine seems to think it's coming out of hibernation when that option is most definitely OFF.  But just like Skydrive can't be fully turned off (well, until you use a Group Policy to forbid it, that is), it seems the power settings have a mind of their own, too.  A bit like the task scheduler that has what MS want hard-boiled into it.  It's a disgrace really.  MS seems to think all our PCs belong to them!  Either way, if you could possibly fix something simple like this it would be nice (or make us buy Win 9 just to get something that works???)

    Hi, Anannya,

    I have the same problem with Win 8.1. It is set to Sleep PC Never and Power off hard drive Never, but it runs for 30 min or less then turns off.

    In Administrative Events , I get "The previous system shutdown at 20:00:51 on ‎19/‎12/‎2013 was unexpected.", but, when I look in Windows logs as you suggested, there is no entry.

    I've run through your methods 1 and 2 with no change.

    Any ideas?

    Edit: I forgot to say that the USB mouse has also taken to freezing after about 20 min while I'm using it.

    The computer shut downs have not happened while I've been using the computer, only when it was left on its own (with the exception of a chkdsk /r /x for a USB hard drive today - I assume it was still running , as it is a large hard drive and had got to 0% when I left it running)

    Hi Jodi,

    First check the event viewer for additional information related to the issue and let us know about the same.

    Event logs are special files that record significant events on your computer, such as when a user logs on to the computer or when a program encounters an error. Whenever these types of events occur, Windows records the event in an event log that you can read by using Event Viewer. Advanced users might find the details in event logs helpful when troubleshooting problems with Windows and other programs.

    To do the same, please follow these steps:

    a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

    b) Select Event Viewer.

    c) New Event Viewerwindow will popup.

    d) On the Left hand side you can see Windows Logs.

    e) Click on the Windows Logs.

    f) Under Windows Log click on the Application.

    g) Now you will able to see the complete error message.

    Copy the complete error message and paste it, so we check the complete error message.

    Please refer to these steps:

    Method 1:

    I would suggest you to **** follow these steps to run System Maintenance troubleshooter.

    a. PressWindows key + W and type troubleshooting.

    b. SelectTroubleshooting.

    c. SelectView all on the top left corner.

    d. RunSystem Maintenance trouble shooter.

    Method 2:

    Make sure your PC is up to date

    Make sure the latest updates are installed on your PC. For more info on installing updates for your PC, see Windows Update: Frequently asked questions.
