All system restore points constantly deleted with VSS services/volsnap errors

Original Title: Let's start simple! Is there anyone from Microsoft out there?

For 6 weeks, I've been trying to sort out why my system restore points keep getting wiped out - something to do with VSS Server, I think. But let's forget that for now - all I want at the moment is a definitive answer whether VSS Server should be on Manual or Automatic. Some MS documents say one, some the other. If I can find out this, we can then move on to the next step of why it keeps getting switched off, regardless of which option is chosen. So SHOULD IT BE ON MANUAL OR AUTO? surely that isn't difficult to answer and must be known by MS.

    Hi,

    Frankly that you had to re-install Windows is not that big of a surprise......

    and you now know about Registry Cleaner/System Optimizers.

    Am now back to volsnap errors!! Happens some days, not others.

    Today's and 3rd Feb were:The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened

    5th Feb were: The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted during detection.

    4th Feb (10 on total) were The shadow copy of volume C: could not be created due to a failure in creating the necessary on disk structures.

    Also on 1st, 31st Jan, 25 Jan, 23 Jan.

    Some wipe restore points, some don't, some remove some.

    I've not used any Registry Cleaners since the complete re-install

    Hi,

    Well its not Windows so it has to be an external, to the OS, cause. Either 3rd party software

    or a hardware problem.

    Since you repartitioned, formatted, and installed Windows have you played with the settings

    in anyway? Does the partition it is on have plenty of space?

    Did you check the BIOS and chipset drivers to ensure they are the latest after the install?

    What antivirus/security programs are installed (much less running) on the system? Some 3rd

    party applications can cause this issue.

    Suspect anything you installed just before those errors started showing up. (Or it could have

    been an update to a virus/security or other program not necessarily via Windows Updates.)

    Hi Rob,

    Checking dates and  times, I re-installed Windows on the 17 or 18th January and had the first volsnap at 9.49.19 on the 18th, though it wasn't wiping system restore points then, as I happily wrote on the 21st that it was going fine!

    I had volsnap on 18/1 at 9.49, 221/1 at 16.44, then 31/1, 1/2, 4/2, 5/2 and  8/2 (and VSS on the same  days).

    The first occurred during installation of lots of Windows updates from 9.07 to 9.53 (18th Jan). I'm guessing I hadn't done anything else before that. I installed Acronis backup (probably the first thing I'd install) at 9.50.35 on the 18th(about a minute after the first volsnap)

    I also had 7 writer error messages at 9.46 on the 18th.

    C drive is 100 Gb. I've checked the BIOS (though I only know about the obvious parts) and all drivers are supposed to be up to date

    Have  I played with the settings in any way!!! What have I not done!

    MS got me to make set up a new user profile, as they said IT WAS CORRUPT

    **MS got me to redo Software Protection Services, as they said IT WAS CORRUPT (**I have had to do this lots of time before and after the re-install)

    I've also had to repair a corrupt icon database.
