All system restore points constantly deleted with VSS services/volsnap errors

Original Title: Let's start simple! Is there anyone from Microsoft out there?

For 6 weeks, I've been trying to sort out why my system restore points keep getting wiped out - something to do with VSS Server, I think. But let's forget that for now - all I want at the moment is a definitive answer whether VSS Server should be on Manual or Automatic. Some MS documents say one, some the other. If I can find out this, we can then move on to the next step of why it keeps getting switched off, regardless of which option is chosen. So SHOULD IT BE ON MANUAL OR AUTO? surely that isn't difficult to answer and must be known by MS.

    Hi Rob,

    I think I'll have a hard job convincing the manufacturer with no evidence - it shows up OK with chkdsk and has 100% Health Status with CrystalDiskInfo (though I've no idea what the readings  mean in CrystalDisk)

    Hi,

    Again that still makes me think malware or hard drive (possibly controller or motherboard) issues.

    And you already have ruled out Windows with the Reset.

    I would think it is the hard drive.

    To confuse matters even more, last reboot, I got a volsnap error:

    The shadow copies of volume D: were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened.

    actually, 2, both the same,

    but DIDN'T lose my restore point! (this has never happened before)

    Is it normal for the Properties of all System Volume Information folders to say 0 bytes? Is it worth restoring these from one of my many backups when System Restore was working yesterday and the day before?

    Just checked System Restore config after my re-install. E drive was 65 Gb, D drive was 10 so I've increased it to 103, and C was only 5 so I increased it to 43. But, if the space is too small, does it destroy ALL system restore points or only some?
