MS forced install to Windows 8.1 after I click on Remind me later.

* Original Title: MS Hijacked my computer & forced install to 8.1

I know there are other posts about that blue ribbon that asks if you want to install 8.1 - OR - rudely interrupts at inconvenient times (like during client presentations) and forces a restart (to update) without any way to postpone it. 

BUT - JUST NOW ... a blue ribbon popped up about a restart (this one looked like it had a postponement drop down) and no option to cancel. I thought I had requested a postponement but INSTEAD IT STARTED AN UPGRADE TO 8.1 WITHOUT MY APPROVAL ... WORSE ... no ability to interrupt, no ability to close open apps, no ability to do a backup first. Right now it's doing setup (about 82% complete.

I work independently, cannot afford downtime. 

IF I have to pay to have my laptop fixed I want Microsoft to pay for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  But I will defintely drop back to Windows 7 or buy a MAC.

HELP, PLEASE!!!  (and thank you!!!)

    THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!!

    The blue ribbon popup has been appearing for months...I have ALWAYS declined. Then, just yesterday, when it appeared again, it gave me NO option to decline...just to install now, install in a few hours, or install later. I clicked on later. The popup appeared again this afternoon, and only gave me the now/and a few hour options. I contacted HP Tech Support in a panic, to see if they could do something to stop the update which would automatically take place in a few hours. They were no help at all, telling me that they would FIX everything. After a few hours, guess what....I NOW HAVE 8.1. INSTALLED ON MY PC. I NEVER, NEVER WANTED IT AND NOW I'M STUCK WITH IT!!! THANKS SO MUCH MS OR **** UP MY PC!!

    This is inexcusable..and before you tell me I must have accidentally allowed the upgrade, I can assure you that I NEVER did. The popup both yesterday and today gave me NO option to say NO!!

    DITTO!   And, it is not the first time MS has overtaken my computer and installed whatever they like, in this case 8.1.  They will probably continue to be bullies until someone with more money than I sues them for destroying property for which I PAID and maybe wasn't ready tgo upgrade!!!

    Now that I have insufficiently vented, can anyone out there tell me in "simpleton" language how to get rid of the annoying arrow in the corner (THAT DOESN'T WORK) when I search for something?  It only prevents me from seeing what is on my screen.  And, is there any way to change the awful deep purple color on the popup right column behind "Search, Share, Start", etc?

    This just happened to me...I work from home and am extremely busy with work today and windows forces an update to 8.1 to occur...unethical behavior...DO NOT GET WINDOWS 8!

    Are you kidding me? This update happened on it's own! I work from home so this bs has screwed up my work progress for the day. Why are you making it sound like I did something wrong. I see an attorney in my near future for Microsoft hijacking my computer without consent. Idiots!

    This happened on my machine too. Microsoft seems to have kept loopholes in the Windows to force its users to do anything they want. Whenever microsoft please too they can install anyting on the users computer.

    This action of forced upgrade to 8.1 is unacceptable and Microsoft has to pay for it. Like others I was also in the middle of critical work when microsoft forced a timer and started installing 8.1. Within the 13 mins timeout I tried may things to stop it, editing reg keys, trying shutdown /a etc. and none worked. I even tried forced reset to kill the upgrade but couldn't. This act of hijacking the computer needs to be explained and Microsoft needs to answer what information it is hijacking through its windows update loophole.
