Problem checking for updates - Code 80240442 - Windows Update ran into a problem

Just updated to 8.1 update 1 manually hoping that it would clear an issue I'm having with Windows update, but to no avail.  (Oh - and the error message before the Win8.1 Update 1 was 80244FFF.  I think it's the same issue, just a new number.)

I've not been able to connect to Windows Update for over a month, and nothing I've tried has managed to reset it.

bizarre, my update is working after months of failure. i am not joking. BUT only automatically. if i try to check for updates manually i receive the same error code and no updates

AND i believe i have the solution for all of these problems...

i needed to restart my modem. as soon as it had restarted, automatic updates worked. i think all who are suffering from this problem should at least give this a try. just unplug your modem, wait 30 seconds then re-plug in your modem or push the restart button. it is worth a try.

Ok, I was just wanting to add my name to the list of people still with the problem.  I've given up on Microsoft Support actually fixing the issue.  It seems like certain machines eventually get kicked to some bad update servers.  I spent MANY hours before with the old code. Different Windows keys, install/upgrade paths, network hardware, network settings, and now system drives don't stop the issue from eventually popping back up on my machine.  Their tier 1 support spent an hour or so remotely trying all the fixes that I tried from the forums.  Tier 2 and 3 basically just kept running Chkdsk on my SSD system drive, along with a couple commands that they had trouble pasting to my command prompt correctly..  I sent them packet captures from that machine trying to check for updates and 2 other machines with the same type of software installed that don't have the issue, but never heard back.  It sounded like they might have actually fixed it with update 1, but it looks like they just have a new code for it now.. :(

    Korn,

I'm just an ordinary user like you. I don't work for Microsoft and I cannot mark threads as answered. I don't know who did if you say Andy didn't.

I did that before...never worked... I'm guessing you marked that as answered, not andy..  He probably also still has the problem and just gave up on support here too..
