Problem checking for updates - Code 80240442 - Windows Update ran into a problem

Just updated to 8.1 update 1 manually hoping that it would clear an issue I'm having with Windows update, but to no avail.  (Oh - and the error message before the Win8.1 Update 1 was 80244FFF.  I think it's the same issue, just a new number.)

I've not been able to connect to Windows Update for over a month, and nothing I've tried has managed to reset it.

bizarre, my update is working after months of failure. i am not joking. BUT only automatically. if i try to check for updates manually i receive the same error code and no updates

AND i believe i have the solution for all of these problems...

i needed to restart my modem. as soon as it had restarted, automatic updates worked. i think all who are suffering from this problem should at least give this a try. just unplug your modem, wait 30 seconds then re-plug in your modem or push the restart button. it is worth a try.

    Same here....have more or less given up with this problem. I will be thinking very hard about whether purchasing another Windows operating system - when the time comes to upgrade - is a good idea.

    yes wilson you are so right. there has not be one original idea on this thread. all old hat all just blank heads talking. i have suffered with this for several months. reinstall is a joke, refresh too. 

    is someone out there with an original idea? please....

    I will add to the list of people who have tried all these suggestions. I have already reinstalled my OS twice since buying this computer. I am not making extensive system modifications, using unusual software, or the like. This is a very frustrating situation.

    Right now I am trying WSUS Offline update (thanks for the link from contributors to this thread).

    I strongly agree this thread should not be marked RESOLVED.

    Refer "Refresh your PC without affecting your files" section in the above article.

    Note: Apps you installed from websites and DVDs will be removed. Apps that came with your PC and apps you installed from the Windows Store will be reinstalled. Windows puts a list of removed apps on your desktop after refreshing your PC.
