Problem checking for updates - Code 80240442 - Windows Update ran into a problem

Just updated to 8.1 update 1 manually hoping that it would clear an issue I'm having with Windows update, but to no avail.  (Oh - and the error message before the Win8.1 Update 1 was 80244FFF.  I think it's the same issue, just a new number.)

I've not been able to connect to Windows Update for over a month, and nothing I've tried has managed to reset it.

bizarre, my update is working after months of failure. i am not joking. BUT only automatically. if i try to check for updates manually i receive the same error code and no updates

AND i believe i have the solution for all of these problems...

i needed to restart my modem. as soon as it had restarted, automatic updates worked. i think all who are suffering from this problem should at least give this a try. just unplug your modem, wait 30 seconds then re-plug in your modem or push the restart button. it is worth a try.

    Hello Paz,

    Thank you for the update.

    I would suggest you to try following steps and check if it helps.

    a. Press Windows + X keys and select command prompt(admin).

    b. In the command prompt window, type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each command.

    REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S

    REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S

    REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S

    REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S

    REGSVR32 WUCLTUX.DLL /S

    REGSVR32 WUWEBV.DLL /S

    REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL /S

    REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL /S

    c. Close command prompt and then try to install updates.

    I am trying the same method, found the same problem. Elsewhere I found that first you have to load Components

    Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and click file, load hive then navigate to components (the file without any designation, not the txt file for example) in C:\Windows\System32\config.

    there is a suggestion that one user's problem is being caused by a bad hard drive which is causing bitshifts. I would appreciate any perspective on a method to repair files short of doing a refresh, necessitating very time consuming re-installs of other software (nothing unsual).

    ok method 2, not sure about your computer's registry, but mine does not have

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS....
